Default Reese Witherspoon: I want my kids teased and bullied

Reese Witherspoon strolls along Santa Monica Blvd. with the nanny, her daughter Ava, 8, and son Deacon, 4, in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Reese, 31, was interviewed on Good Morning America earlier this morning to chat up her new film, Penelope. The film is about a girl named Penelope, who ends up with a pig’s nose and ears as the result of a family curse. Reese related herself and her kids to pig-nosed Penelope:

“We all sort of deal with that in our own childhood or raising children. I wouldn’t want my kids to miss out on any of that teasing and bullying. It makes you who you are–when you don’t make the soccer team and you can’t… The thing that drives me crazy today is everyone wins the award. Everyone wins an MVP. No. They’re not! I distinctly recall the two weeks of crying because I didn’t make the volleyball team. It made me interesting.

And what if Reese’s kids don’t make the soccer team one day?

“You know what?” Reese said. “You deal with. Hopefully, it helps kids figure out who they are. But it is tough as a parent. But that’s part of being a parent!”

Penelope opens on Friday, Feb. 29. That’s right, leap year day! It’s the first film to open on leap year day since 1980!

The video of Reese on MGA should be soon be posted on Go.com.

That's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard. Not making a sporting team at school isn't the same damn thing as being bullied ... which is one of the worst fucking things a kid can go through. Depending on the severity, it can totally destroy a person emotionally and the effects can last straight through adulthood.

Normally, I like Reese, but at this moment I want to punch her dumb ass right across the room for ever wishing such a thing on anybody.

She obviously has no clue what real bullying is. I know a couple of people who were bullied in school and they have never gotten over it. They would have given anything to "miss out" on it.

i think she just meant teasing in general, the sort of thing most kids go through. and she's right - it builds character. i'm also against giving everyone an award whether they win or not, or schools that don't have grades because they don't want to hurt kids' confidence... life is tough, best to learn that early on.

I went through a (thankfully brief) "nerdy" phase in Gr 7-8 where I was bullied and it was just terrible for my already poor adolescent self-esteem.

Adversity can be a "character builder" but only in small doses. I don't regret what I learned about compassion from being the victim of bullying. It's made me stand up for those who get bullied now in my adult life and it's given me courage over time just to be myself. However, I think that kids can learn those lessons in other ways, without being subject to the extreme cruelty and emotional torment of bullying.

What Reese is saying actually serves to make bullying seem natural and okay, as though it's just a part of child development. It shouldn't be considered an aspect of "growing up" because the terror and hurt kids inflict on one another can leave lasting scars. Furthermore, the bullied often end up becoming bullies themselves if they get the chance and bullies were often bullied in the past. It's an ugly and unnatural cycle that I don't think Reese understands at all from the way she speaks about it.

I agree that what she probably meant was that she didn't want her kid growing up in a hothouse where they had no sense about the real knocks life will hand you. Being teased a bit is part of that. And funny what she said about everyone getting an award for everything. My older heathen today told me he thought the whole house/point thing at his school was a joke and all they were trying to do was be fair, therefore he wasn't interested. I asked what he meant and he said 'well House A won first, then House C, now House D has won and I guess we'll win next since that will only be fair'. He said with a real sneer and felt like it wasn't even worth trying to get house points because they didn't really mean anything anyways. Guess how proud I am of my little heathen, eh?

What parent wishes this kind of crap on their kid? Reese wants her kids to be bullied and teased, Alba wants her brown kid to be a nerd (or something of the sort).
Are celeb parents trying to relate to us common folk through their children?
    STFU already!!!

I really don't think she used the word bullying to mean that she wanted her children to be harmed physically or emotionally. Being bullied is a horrendous experience for anyone at any age.
