Actor Paul Newman undergoes life-saving surgery after 'cancer diagnosis'
Legendary actor Paul Newman has undergone surgery to save his life - after being diagnosed with cancer.
The screen star reportedly entered a New York hospital for the secret operation.
Everything went well but Newman, 83, is showing no signs of slowing down and remains very involved in his passion for car racing. Scroll down for more...
Health problems: Newman at a birthday party last year (right) and in the film Harper in 1966
He is fit enough to go out and has been seen outside his home in Westport, Connecticut, where his neighbours say he looks well.
An insider close to the star said that he recently checked into a New York hospital for serious surgery "related to cancer" which left him convalescing for three weeks.
"He initially was having trouble breathing and a hard time walking.
"After Thanksgiving, his family became concerned and took him to see a New York specialist.
Milestone: Paul Newman with wife Joanne Woodward at a screening of their film 'Chocolat' held at the Sweetland Screening Room in 2001
"He was admitted right away into the hospital where he underwent surgery.
"He's bounced back now but he's not a well man and people in his company are trying to keep this very quiet." He added.
Another friend of the star also confirmed to a US magazine that Newman had recently undergone a "major medical procedure".
An observer at Newman's restaurant added: "Paul does look frail and his thinning hair has gone nearly white.
"But he does seem feisty for a man of his advanced years.
"After exchanging small talk with some employees he and Joanne got into matching steel-grey SUV's to follow one another home.
"Before Paul left he played speed racer and gunned it for a couple of laps around the parking lot."
He also revealed that there is something else that is keeping the star looking forward to the future - his 50th wedding anniversary with wife Joanne Woodward.
The couple are due to celebrate their milestone on January 29. The insider added: "Whatever health problems Paul has mean nothing to him because he's lived to see this magical milestone with Joanne."

Aw, hope he recovers.
I think the National Enquirer ran this on their front page a little while ago -- I've started taking interest into the stories they run ever since the Jamie Lynn pregnancy debacle.

Love Paul Newman. What a man. They just don't make 'em like him anymore.

I do suppose, though, that if he was a young actor today and left his wife and son for another woman (as he did years and years ago) he'd be vilified from one end of GR to the other.

He did? I never knew that. I thought Joanne was his one and only. Oh well, they've been together for so many years that I think he can be forgiven for that.
I hope he gets well.

Wait, doesn't that describe someone that passed away recently? That person has received nothing but love and deep mourning here as far as I know.

He was married and had a son (who later died of a drug overdose) when he met JoAnne Woodward and fell in love. He loeft the wife, married Woodward and lived happily ever after. I recently saw a documentary where they even did spots on TV, sort of 'welcome to our home, see how happy we are' type thing. I think they, like others, just fell in love. That's why I tend not to get too judgemental when one person leaves someone and immediately forms a strong relationship with anotehr person. It does happen and although it's hard it's doesn't mean they're bad people. Love Paul.

Thanks for back story. It's possible that at the time I would have considered him to be a dirty dog for that, but it's obvious after all these years that Joanne has been the true love of his life, so I can't blame him. He seems like a good man.
