Clay Aiken, who makes his Broadway debut next week in "Spamalot.", was recently interviewed by Newsweek's Ramin Setoodeh.
Below are excerpts / highlights from the interview which starts off nice but quickly turns ugly:
NEWSWEEK:
How's the "Spamalot" rehearsing going?
CA: I'm sore. I couldn't even get off the toilet the other day. It hurts so bad. I don't know if it's I'm not coordinated or using muscles I never had to use before.
Like what?
CA: My legs. Having to remember three, four, five [taps feet]. I can't move and think at the same time.
Did you know your socks don't match?
CA: I have a bunch of striped socks. It's too difficult to match them, so now I just pick up two in the morning. Even if I wear a tux to an awards show, the socks never match.
Have you seen "Spamalot"?
CA: The first time I saw it I thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever seen in my entire life. My tour drummer is the "Spamalot" drummer, and [he] said you've got to see it again.
Are you a Python fan?
CA: I thought Monty Python was a person until three months ago.
How did you get into a fight with that lady on a plane?
CA: I'm not going to talk about it.
I was just curious because you've never talked about it.
CA: I did talk about it.
What about the Kelly Ripa thing?
CA: I'm not going to discuss it.
Did you think it was homophobic?
CA: I'm not going to discuss it.
What do you want to talk about?
CA: I think we're done.
Can we talk about something fun?
CA: No, we're done. I thought NEWSWEEK would be more reputable. I'm surprised.
But I think people are curious about it.
CA: It was a year ago. This is NEWSWEEK. It's not the National Enquirer. I'd hate to have a job where I had to be rude to people.
We're just having a conversation.
CA: Change the subject! I'd never take a job where I had to do something that I didn't want to do.
What about all those Ford commercials on "American Idol"?
CA: That wasn't a job.
It was part of your job.
CA: It wasn't a Ford commercial. It was a music video. It was a completely different thing.
I'll change the subject. What do you do for fun?
CA: I watch the news. I read news magazines, but I'm reconsidering that now.
Are you going to watch "Idol"?
CA: I haven't watched since season four. I compare it to high-school football--if it weren't for high school, we wouldn't be successful, but I don't need to keep going to the football games.

How did you get into a fight with that lady on a plane?
CA: That's personal.
I was just curious because you've never talked about it.
CA: Bitch, what did I just say?
What about the Kelly Ripa thing?
CA: Michael Jackson said she's ignorant.
Did you think it was homophobic?
CA: *crickets chirp*
What do you want to talk about?
CA: I think we're done.
Can we talk about something fun?
CA: No, we're done. I thought NEWSWEEK would kiss my ass and make feel special. The Claymates will not be happy.
But I think people are curious about it.
CA: You're being mean to me. Not to mention, glib.
We're just having a conversation.
CA: Change the subject! Just because I troll for sex on the....Wait...Change the subject!
What about all those Ford commercials on "American Idol"?
CA: That wasn't a job.
It was part of your job.
CA: It wasn't a Ford commercial, asshole. It was a music video. It was a completely different thing. Don't get slapped.
I'll change the subject. What do you do for fun?
CA: I watch the news, and hope somebody mentions my name. I read news magazines, but I'm reconsidering that now, because of your ignorance.
Are you going to watch "Idol"?
CA: I haven't watched since season four. I compare it to sleeping with the high-school football team--if it weren't for putting out in high school, we wouldn't be successful, but I don't need to keep going to the football games to blow people.

I am not a CA fan but I think he has a point. I actually don't think he was that out of line if I can say that without having anything thrown at me, lolol. He wasn't there to discuss an incident that is old news. The sort of questions he was being asked is why I don't watch mainstream media anymore. Once he said "I am not talking about it" the reporter should have stopped. And the guy is human- he was probably embarrassed by those events (although Ripa should have been on that incident- I saw that and she did come across as possibly homophobic) and he let himself get a little pissed off.
And that line of questioning from Newsweek seems a little tabloidy.

ITA. He was probably expecting Newsweek to be above gossip and he's probably sick and tired of those type of questions. He was just there to discuss the Broadway thing and his charity work.

I think he has a point too. People are seeing his 'bitch switch' more often now because the last thing people want to talk about with him is his music. I wouldn't call myself a fan, but I can't deny the guy is talented and he has a huge fanbase. The constant poking into and focus on his private life is tiresome.
As for the Kelly Ripa incident, she bugs the hell out of me. I was really hoping he'd defend himself more and rip her a new axxxxxx. Allegedly, Mark was a former stripper so she should be more concerned where he's been.
