...So stop asking!
Like a speaker who greets thunderous applause with a disingenuous "stop, you're too kind, no really", Jerry Seinfeld wants the world to know: he could host the Oscars, he just doesn't want to.
In British magazine Empire, the 53-year-old comedian reveals that he has turned the Academy down on numerous occasions. Why doesn't he want to host the country's preeminent award show? Because he's afraid he'll do so well they'll keep asking him back.
"If I hosted the Oscars and I did it really well, they would just ask me to do it again. And then again. And again."
It's not just the threat of success that has Seinfeld staying away from the Oscar stage. It's those pesky, unfun, nervous nominees in the crowd. He tells Empire, "There's no up-side. I don't know, it's just a weird environment. I'm lucky that I can do things that kind of interest me as a challenge, but everybody there is nervous, you know? They want to win their award. They're not there to have fun. I like to go in front of an audience that wants to have fun.
