George Clooney and Don Cheadle received this year's Men of Peace Award in Rome yesterday:
The award was given in recognition of "the efforts of
the two actors in favour of peace in the troubled region of
Darfur and for having contributed towards saving lives and
alleviating the suffering of the civilian victims of the
war". Make sure you check out the Save Darfur website.
George Clooney is looking hot and it is seems like he and girlfriend Sarah Larson are still going strong!

It's wonderful that they were recognized for their efforts, but the awards should be handed out to people that have to live in Darfur, or for the aid workers who live their entire lives helping impoverished people.

Exactly. There are a lot of nameless people who actually devote their lives to others in dire need. They don't get their names in the papers, they don't get awards, they don't have villas in Italy.
Ugh.

The whole point of these awards to celebrities is to continue to draw publicity to the problem and therefore increase donations to the cause. Marketing disguised as philanthropy recognition.
As noble as the thought may be, an award to an anonymous aid worker will not garner one line of ink any where except by their mother in a letter to her distant relatives.

I understand this point, but it's also quite insulting. We used to recognize thinkers, builders, workers, people who actually did things. There was a world before celebrity culture. And it's sad that it takes a celebrity to draw publicity to a cause....but that's no excuse for exalting vapid, overpaid celebrities. This celebrity culture has gone way too far. It's ridiculous.
And why shouldn't we recognize some lowly worker? Maybe if we all started realizing how dumb and hypocritical celebrities were, we wouldn't award them, and start recognizing real people who do real things.

^ ITA. There is an entire world outside of celebrity culture, and it saddens me that now we must give out awards to celebrities for their menial efforts, just to expose awful goings on in other parts of the world.

There are awards for non-celebrities. We just don't hear about them. As for celebrity culture, we're all part of it by being on this site.
With Darfur, no one really paid attention to the genocide there until Clooney began banging the drum. Sad, but true. Because of him, HBO heavily promoted its webcast a documentary on Darfur last weekend. A documentary Clooney produced and narrated. If I had produced that documentary, think anyone would have given a damn?

He looked less than enthralled with the pavement stone they gave him as an award.

Hear that! All they need do is turn up, look pretty, flash their Hollyweird grin, read what their other half has wrote for them (coughpittcough) and voila, instant award.

There are lots of ways to make people give a damn. I mean, I knew about Darfur before Clooney opened his overrated mouth and I'm sure other people did too. He doesn't deserve an award. None of these stupid celebs do. They award themselves constantly. We need to stop with the celebrity ego-stroking and start recognizing real people who actually make a difference and don't just show up places for photo ops.
