Beyonce causes Ethiopia hunger strike?

The singer and the patriarch met before she performed as part of celebrations of the country’s millennium. Student Daniel Techale said 30 of his friends had been hospitalized after the hunger strike and accused Beyonce of “provok[ing] the whole situation” while blasting the patriarch of “practically a nonreligious act. It’s unacceptable, or inappropriate, to say the least.”

I must be going Brit like crazy, because I do not get that story at all.
Why did they go on a hunger strike and why is Bee being blamed for it??
