Default Mindy McCready sentenced to 1 year in prison

Mindy McCready was sentenced Friday to a year in jail on a 2004 drug charge after she violated her probation in Florida.

The 31-year-old country singer has been in jail since July when she was returned to Nashville after being accused of scratching her mother in a scuffle and resisting sheriff's deputies in her hometown of Fort Myers.

McCready received a suspended three-year sentence in 2004 for fraudulently obtaining prescription painkillers. She was resentenced Friday because of the probation violation.

The singer sobbed as she asked for leniency from Circuit Judge Jeff Bivins.

"Your honor, I can honestly tell you this: This has been the longest two months of my life ... not being able to hold my son ... has been excruciatingly painful."

"I could only say I'm sorry," she said. "Please give me a chance to make things as right as they can possibly be."

Bivins sentenced her to a year in the county jail with credit for 75 days of time served. After her release she will face another two years of probation.

Deputy District Attorney General Derek Smith said McCready violated probation by being charged in a new offense, not reporting those charges immediately to her probation officer and by the nature of the new assault charges.

McCready had a hit in 1996 with "Guys Do It All the Time."

She has struggled with legal and personal problems that included a beating by her then-boyfriend and suicide attempts. She gave birth to her son in 2006.

Still pending is a charge of violating her probation for driving on a suspended license in 2005. She pleaded guilty to the driving charge, but her attorney has since sought to withdraw the plea, citing new evidence.

Not that I think she shouldn't be in trouble, but it seems they're being awfully harsh with this one.

As I recall, she was so eager to be with her son, that she tried to off herself twice after finding out she was pregnant with him.

I don't think its harsh. She chose to live in "real America" not Hollyweird and I'm glad the justice system in the rest of the country isn't as starstruck as they are in L.A. Besides, she's had multiple incidents and the fact that one of them involved getting into a physical altercation with cops doesn't help her case.

Are you going to get custody of her child, while she's in prison?

Or why don't you just stab her directly in the back...........

Year in the county jail, bleah...if I had to do that kind of time, I'd rather go ahead on to prison.

It's been a downward spiral for this one. From the beatings she took from that boyfriend to more self-sabotage. Clearly she's quite disturbed.

So are you suggesting we let criminals go because they're mothers? That's ridiculous. I think she's gotten off easy far too many times. It's great to see the justice system finally doing the right thing. The child would be much better of with someone else anyway. Good riddance to her.

She's playing the crying game. Being a country singer should give her an advantage at that. She could put it to music and make a hit song out of it.

    Singer McCready out of hospital

US country singer Mindy McCready has been released from a Florida hospital, four days after an apparent overdose.

The 28-year-old was found unconscious in a hotel lobby on Friday.
William McKnight, who was with her at the time, told investigators she had taken large amounts of two unidentified substances and left a suicide note.
Local authorities said they will not be issuing criminal charges against Mr McKnight and Ms McCready and would be taking no further action in the matter.
The troubled star was recently charged in Arizona with identity theft, the stress of which was said by her lawyer to have contributed to her hospital admission.
She had previously appeared in court to testify against Mr McKnight, who has been charged with attempting to murder her in an alleged fight that took place at her Nashville home in May.
A few days before the attack, Ms McCready was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and driving on a suspended licence.
She had been due to appear at Williamson County Court on Monday for a probation violation hearing.
Ms McCready had a number one hit in 1996 with Guys Do It All the Time. After the alleged attack in May she appeared on nationwide TV shows to speak out against domestic violence.
