Brad Pitt talks about Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, and kids

VENICE, Italy (September 4, 2007) -

As Brad Pitt looks to the future with partner Angelina Jolie and their children, he speaks openly about the friendship he still shares with ex-wife Jennifer Aniston since their divorce in 2005.

"Jen and I still maintain a deep friendship and have a lot of life together that isn't erased in any way," he tells V Magazine, hitting newsstands on Friday.

Brad, who sports "Old Hollywood" style on four separate covers of the magazine, adds, "The most important thing about that time was for Jen and me to figure out if - how do I put it? - if we didn't want to go on without any outside influence. Is this where we got off? Have we taken this as far as we wanted to? Those questions had to be answered before an attraction for Angie could be answered."

Brad Pitt thinks his looks are starting to go now that he's turned 40. "One thing sucks, your face kind of goes," the actor says in the October issue of Details. "Your body's not quite working the same. But you earned it. You earned that, things falling apart."

Pitt, who stars in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, also revealed his feelings on becoming a dad so quickly to his four children with Angelina Jolie. "Well, I had one kid, then two kids, then three kids. Two and a half years or so. Listen, I've always embraced extremes, so it doesn't feel odd to me. There's a couple weeks of finding your balance, and then it's in stone."

So will the be more little Jolie-Pitts? "We're not done," Brad confesses! After all, he loves the bonding between his big brood. "You just look at them and go, my daughter's from Ethiopia, two sons from Asia, a daughter who's born in Namibia - and they are brother and sister. They have the same dynamics I had growing up, and I... It pleases me so much."

Another thing that makes Brad happy is his humanitarian work in Darfur with Not on Our Watch. It's something that brought Angie and I together certainly - she's absolute evidence for me of someone facilitating changes for the better."

"I wish I'd changed my name," Brad Pitt told me in a swanky hotel in the funky little African coast beach town of Swapokmund, Namibia last year. "Made a stage name. But I wasn't going to do it. I was going to just be me, that's it I didn't want any pretense and I was adamant about it. Now, looking back, I wish I had, because then, when people call your your name out on the street, you know where it's coming from."

We'd been talking about a line in Andrew Dominik's adaptation of Ron Hansen's 1983 novel, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which debuts to the public next week at the Toronto International Film Festival, and opens in four cities September 21.

(James says to his killer-to-be, played in the film by by Casey Affleck, "Do you ever get surprised when you see yourself in a mirror? Do you ever find yourself saying, 'Why do they call him by my name?'")

After a long spell of being harassed by "stalkerazzi who shoot through your window"-Pitt talks with subdued bitterness of one type who stuck a `Team Aniston' bumper sticker on his brother's car at the height of the furor over his divorce (mingled in the tabloids with his uniting with Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Angelina Jolie)-he holds no regrets:

"Man, you know, you got to make decisions that are best for your life and that's the bottom line, and as rocky as it may be, I've got the long term in mind. It's a shame that it's got to be used as public entertainment. But it's not going to stop me from what I believe is best. That's the way it's got to be."

I don't believe that they have any kind of friendship, deep or otherwise. Most of his answers read as interview double talk as he's never wanted to answer those questions directly. Looks to me like he's trying to let us know that he made sure their marriage got the respect and closure that it deserved before starting up with Angelina.

I still maintain that it was an on the set affair that took over his life. You know, the ultimate woman and all.
