Pals feared that Wilson was driven to the suicide bid by pictures of stunning actress Kate canoodling with her new man.

Wilson, star of films including Wedding Crashers and Starsky & Hutch, was found semi-conscious by brother Andrew, 43, at his Los Angeles home. It is understood he had also taken a pills overdose.

Witnesses said they saw him being wheeled out of the house on a stretcher with bandages on his wrist.

Wilson, 38, was rushed to hospital where he was later said to be stable and transferred to a detox unit.

It is thought his cuts were only superficial.

The drama came after Kate, 28, was pictured in US mags cuddling and kissing in a Malibu supermarket with comic actor DAX SHEPARD, 32.

Wilson — famed for his misshapen nose — is well known on the Hollywood party circuit and loves the playboy lifestyle. But friends say he was deeply upset by his split with Kate, who he met while filming You, Me and Dupree.

The pair had a six-month fling that ended Kate’s marriage to BLACK CROWES singer CHRIS ROBINSON.

Wilson prompted the break-up with Kate after they argued about his wild ways — but it is believed he now regrets doing so and has not been seen dating anyone else.

Last night Wilson issued a statement saying a “difficult time” had led to him ending up in hospital.

He would not elaborate on the apparent suicide bid, but asked to be given peace to “heal in private”.

The Hollywood A-lister has recently been filming Tropic Thunder, directed by his close friend BEN STILLER.

I still am confused on what to believe when it comes to why he did this to himself..

Maybe Kate was just one of many factors? I think we'll find out more soon..hopefully.

I don't really believe this, in fact I'm not sure if I 100 percent believe this isn't a drug cover up. He could have cut his wrists while high...

I'm going to go against the popular opinion and say that I do find it believable that he attempted suicide. Maybe he was high when he did it but still. How many distressed/disturbed comedians have done such things? How many have had drug problems? I don't think it's ok to "abuse" drugs personally so I'm not trying to excuse the behavior but ... I heard someone once commenting about someone who was funny - something to the effect of "I'd hate to be there when the laughter stops". Sometimes, it's too much to live up to, that image people have of you. Sometimes people do lose it...

That being said, I like the bastard and hope he lives and continues to make stupid movies!!!

My mother has always said that she hates to see a child laugh and smile too much, because that little happy face can so easily turn into a really sad face. The two are so closely aligned and it's only when you see a child like that that you realise.

She always said a quiet, content child is the happiest child. I realise more and more that she is right. It's almost as if comedians are looking for some childlike innocent feeling of getting a reaction from people. Once the laughter stops their emotions swing the other way so they look for attention in a different manner.

I'm realising more and more (even though I probably haven't explained that very well) that what my mother said was right.

I really feel for Owen right now.

Owen Wilson pleads for privacy after reported suicide bid

Oscar-nominated actor Owen Wilson called for privacy on Monday after being hospitalized in Los Angeles following a reported suicide attempt.

The 38-year-old star of "Wedding Crashers" and "Zoolander" was said to be in a good condition at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he was transferred on Sunday after paramedics were called to his Santa Monica home.

"I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time," Wilson said in a statement released by his representative to celebrity website TMZ.com.

A spokeswoman at Cedars Sinai said Wilson was in a "good condition."

There was no official word on the reasons for Wilson's hospitalization however reports said the actor had attempted suicide.

Later Monday, sources close to the actor cited by syndicated entertainment television show "Extra" said Wilson had attempted to take his own life.

The source cited by the show said Wilson had been discovered by his brother Luke and that the actor's family and friends were in shock.

Santa Monica police and fire department issued a statement saying that medical aid had been dispatched to Wilson's address in Santa Monica.

The statement said "a person" was taken to local hospital but did not provide any details. Local media reported unidentified police sources confirming that the person treated was Wilson.

Wilson is regarded as one of Hollywood's most bankable actors, having appeared in a string of hit comedies.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for his writing work on "The Royal Tenenbaums" in 2001, in which he also starred with brother Luke Wilson and close friend Ben Stiller.

Wilson has also been romantically linked to "You, Me and Dupree" co-star Kate Hudson although their relationship recently ended.

Wilson is currently working on a new comedy with Stiller, "Tropic Thunder".

I don't think it has anything to do with Kate. He could have anyone and her moving on to Dax is a STEP DOWN...Be proud Owen, I'm sure you're rebound was hotter than her anyways!

I think it was drugs, and maybe he did too many and fell on a knife or something
