Scarlett Johansson covers Tom Waits
Quote:
For those of you who weren’t watching the Grammy’s, the most shocking and inappropriate moment during the awards show was Scarlett Johansson’s announcement that she - like every other large breasted female in Hollywood - is releasing an album.
First off, I want to say, that as far as starlets go, I like Scarlett. Sure she likes to present her boobies on a silver platter with a side of caviar and liver pate. And so what if she exudes an uncomfortable level of sexuality that kind of makes my skin crawl, for the most part she seems well-adjusted.
I just wish she hadn’t used the Grammy Awards as the platform to make that announcement, it seemed like a real misuse of one’s position. But heck, I use PTA meetings to announce my pap-smear results, so who am I to judge?
And unlike Paris Hilton, Scarlett can sing. In fact, I found her singing voice to be quite lovely in Lost In Translation, and best of all, she won’t be releasing some trite and pointless pop album.
Scarlett has wisely devoted her debut album to covering Tom Waits songs. Currently titled, Scarlett Sings Tom Waits, the album is scheduled for release (Rhino Records) next spring to coincide with her movie projects.
Scarlett Johansson has made headlines lately, not for her singing career but for her love life. Most recently the actress has been linked to Justin Timberlake and despite being seen together behaving like a couple, the two have denied a romance.
Justin and Scarlett first met while filming a video together for Justin’s single ”What Comes Around (Goes Around)” off his multi-platinum selling SexyBack album.
Clearly they are just friends. Just because a person sticks their “thing” in your “you-know-what” doesn’t mean you’re in a relationship. At least, that’s what they keep telling me.

Even if she can sing...isn't being an actress enough for her? I'm a bit fed up with actors using their fame in one area to achieve instant and often undeserved fame in another (for a typical example, see: J Lo).

I like Tom Waits' albums as-is. I can't picture her covering his songs.

I'd rather she just covered her chest before she catches cold.

Any famous actor or actress can classify themselves as a singer today. Even Drew Barrymore, the supposed worst voice ever could be a singer if she wanted to be. It's all about computers. Any computer can make anyone sound good.
When people like ScarHo come out and say they're making an album, it just shows to me how money hungry they are. She's not doing it for the love, she's not doing it because it's something she's always dreamed of. She's doing it because some producer and computer tech guy can make her sound good and it'll provide another source of income. She's just taking up space in the music industry that could've been taken by someone who actually has talent and who's actually been busting ass for years as a musician.
/wooo, long rant sorry!

LMAO! Too cute!
I think actors lose credibility when they "do an album", lol!

same here. i like scarlett but my love for tom waits knows no limits. i don't think there has ever been a successful cover of tom waits - how can anyone compete? it'll take a whole lot of talent and personality to get away with this and i'm skeptical, to say the least. i'll give her credit for having the guts to try though.

I didn't mind her until she started opening her mouth. Even if she can sing, (I don't remember the part of her singing in Lost in Translation) doesn't mean she needs to. Just be happy making movies and go away already!

if the end result is good what's wrong with actors branching out? sure, i admit 99% of actors that decide to sing (and model/singers, singer/actors) are crap but if they do it well i'm all for branching out.

Gwyneth Paltrow has a lovely voice & after Duets, I think she was even approached by some people about doing some recording, but she said no. Just because you *can* doesn't mean you *should*. But then, people probably said the same thing to Jennifer Lopez. I guess JLo's endeavors are all pretty much on the same level - her singing, dancing & acting are all in the what.... C+ range? Although she's a "triple threat" I don't think she's considered a leader in anything. Gwyneth & Scarlett, right or wrong, are considered to be excellent actresses, if that makes any difference. 'Scuse my rambling as I sort this out in my brain...

Here's Scarlett singing in the karaoke scene in Lost in Translation. It's not great, not terrible either. I think she'll sound great once they do whatever it is they do to people's voices.
YouTube - lost in translation - charlotte sings karaoke
I somewhat agree, tho... there's no REASON for her to make an album. I was impresses with Gwyneth when she turned down offers after Duets. She knew it would make her look ridiculous.
Anyhow, I don't care if she's stupid or makes bad choices or is a total ho, I adore her.
