Default Renée Zellweger Says All Those Plastic Surgery Rumors Made Her "Sad"

Renée Zellweger is sounding off on those infamous headlines about her appearance.

The Oscar winner, who next stars in the Judy Garland biopic, Judy, is reflecting on her career and her time in and out of the spotlight. From 2010 to 2016, Zellweger decided to take a break from Hollywood, choosing to focus on her well-being after years and years in the public eye.

"I wasn't healthy. I wasn't taking care of myself. I was the last thing on my list of priorities," Zellweger, 50, says in her cover story for New York magazine. "[My therapist] recognized that I spent 99 percent of my life as the public persona and just a microscopic crumb of a fraction in my real life. I needed to not have something to do all the time, to not know what I'm going to be doing for the next two years in advance. I wanted to allow for some accidents. There had to be some quiet for the ideas to slip in."

In 2014, amid her break from acting, Zellweger sparked plastic surgery rumors after attending a red carpet event.

Addressing the speculation, the actress shares, "Well, because there's a value judgment that's placed on us. As if it somehow is a reflection of your character — whether you're a good person or a weak person or an authentic person."

"And the implication that I somehow needed to change what was going on because it wasn't working," Zellweger continues. "That makes me sad. I don't look at beauty in that way. And I don't think of myself in that way. I like my weird quirkiness, my off-kilter mix of things. It enables me to do what I do. I don't want to be something else."

The Dazed and Confused alum also notes, "I got hired in my blue jeans and cowboy boots with my messy hair. I started working like that. I didn't have to change to work. So why was I suddenly trying to fit into some mold that didn't belong to me?"

Well I'm dazed and confused, she has her squint back, that odd stone face is gone. So did the fillers dissolve? In the series she has the ugly stone face but in this interview she looks like Rene again. Also, when she isn't sleeping, shes in the gym working every oz of fat off her.

She never actually denies it though. She said it made her "sad" that people thought she wanted to change herself, and then asks why she was trying to "fit into some mold" which sounds like she's admitting to the surgery but all the haters had the reasons wrong, or something.

Whoever did that cover obviously hates her. What a horrible picture.

Perhaps she should have told her plastic surgeon to make her eyes look 'happy' rather than 'sad', the silly bugger!

Actually, she is in it -- but it was basically as an extra. I certainly wouldn't consider that a role to highlight in an article.

I think the issue with most actresses who claim they don't have PS is that they don't consider fillers, Botox, etc. PS.

Apparently she was in Dazed and Confused, according to IMDB she played "girl in blue truck (uncredited)" which according to eonline is more noteworthy than any of the performances she was credited for, won Oscars for etc.

I needed to not have something to do all the time, to not know what I'm going to be doing for the next two years in advance.
I am willing to grant her a huge amount of leeway here because she's being honest about her life experience in a very stressful, public job, but at the same time I can't ignore the chip on my own shoulder which is to say...godamnit, I hate when celebrities say, "I needed a break for years!!!~!" I'm sure a lot of people in even more stressful jobs would love to take years off from, like, I don't know...everything. I mean, I get it, but I also feel like, "I needed time away from the spotlight to gain some clarity and peace of mind and to stop acting like an entitled twat," would also be sufficient.
