Default Taylor Swift Paints Scooter Braun as Manipulative Bully

Halsey says she's "standing with" Swift, saying "it turns my guts" that female stars are "still susceptible to someone coming along and making you feel powerless out of spite."

Taylor Swift has described herself as “sad and grossed out” by Scooter Braun’s acquisition of Big Machine Records, which holds the rights to her entire catalog up through 2017’s “Reputation,” calling the deal “my worst case scenario.” Swift said she was shocked to first learn of the transfer of her work through news accounts Sunday morning. Braun declined Variety‘s requests for comment.

Swift posted her impassioned reaction in a Tumblr post, which reads:

“For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.

“Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.

“Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

“This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.

“When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.

“Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

“I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, ‘Lover’ [Swift’s first album through her new deal with Universal Music Group] will be out August 23.

    “Sad and grossed out,

Todrick Hall, a former client of Braun who appears in Swift’s new video, posted on behalf of the singer. “For those asking, I left Scooter Braun a long time ago…I am saddened by this news, but not shocked. He is an evil person who’s only concern is his wealth and feeding his disgusting ego. I believe he is homophobic & I know from his own mouth that he is not a Swift fan,” he wrote

Halsey posted support for Swift on Twitter later Sunday, writing, “Taylor Swift is a huge reason why I always insisted to write my own music. I believed if she did it (in a way that made my teeth ache like cold water and my heart swell and my eyes leak) than I should too. Cause that’s how to make someone feel. To drag it from the pits of your heart. To offer it on a platter and say ‘take some but take kindly.’ She deserves to own the painstaking labor of her heart. And it turns my guts that no matter how much power or success a woman has in this life, you are still susceptible to someone coming along and making you feel powerless out of spite. It speaks volumes to how far we have to come in the music industry. The way writers are treated. How as an entertainer you are respected but as a writer you’re walked all over. Even when you are both in one single body. I am standing with her.”

Justin Bieber backs Scooter Braun amid Taylor Swift tirade

Is it too late to say sorry?

Justin Bieber apologized on Sunday for any bad blood between him and Taylor Swift before launching into a full-throated defense of his manager, Scooter Braun — who was blasted by the pop princess earlier for acquiring the rights to her old music.

In her Tumblr tirade, Swift, 29, had referenced a 2016 Instagram post by Bieber as evidence of Braun “bullying me on social media when I was at my lowest point.”

“He’s about to own all the music I’ve ever made,” Swift wrote.

In response, Bieber said he “would like to apologize for posting that hurtful instagram post, at the time i thought it was funny but looking back it was distasteful and insensitive…”

But the “Sorry” singer maintained that his manager had nothing to do with the post and tried to stop it from going up.

“Scooter has had your back since the days you graciously let me open up for you.!” Bieber claimed.

Bieber said he didn’t think it was “fair” for Swift to take to social media to unload on Braun, who obtained the rights to her master recordings when he purchased Swift’s former label, Big Machine Label Group, in a $300 million deal.

“What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog? seems to me like it was to get sympathy u also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully scooter,” Bieber wrote, adding that he and Braun “love” Swift and would love to talk to “resolve any conflict.”

“Neither scooter or i have anything negative to say about you we truly want the best for you,” Bieber wrote. “I usually don’t rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone i loves character thats crossing a line..”

Braun’s wife, Yael Cohen Braun, also lashed out at Swift for accusing her husband of being a bully.

“Girl, who are you to talk about bullying?” she wrote. “The world has watched you collect and drop friends like wilted flowers. My husband is anything but a bully, he’s spent his life standing up for people and causes he believes in.”

Cohen claimed Swift had the opportunity to own the rights to her old tunes and “passed.”

She also said Swift lied when she wrote that she’d found out about the sale of her records when the news of the bombshell deal broke on Sunday.

“Your dad is a shareholder and was notified and [Big Machine Label group founder Scott] Borchetta personally told you before this came out. So no, you didn’t find out with the world,” Cohen wrote on Instagram.

Swift’s rep denied to People that the singer’s dad, Scott Swift, is on the Big Machine board.

“Taylor found out from the news articles when she woke up before seeing any text from Scott Borchetta and he did not call her in advance,” the rep said.

I am tired of this almost 30 year old woman always acting like a victim. I am sorry that she did not like the deal to get back her masters and therefore walked away from it, but that was her choice. She didn’t feel like the offer that she got was a good one, which was well within her right. And it does sound like a crappy offer. However, this is business. No one is going to give up something worth hundreds of millions of dollars at a lower price just to be nice to you. Taylor understands business very well, which is why she frequently sues her own fans. I am Team No One here. This is the kind of stuff you negotiate when you sign a contract. She may have been a teenager, but her dad and their lawyer certainly weren’t. Her dad has always been well-versed in this industry. They should have negotiated better at the outset. It’s not like the masters issue is a novel one. Look at MJ with the Beatles situation. I could see someone who didn’t understand the business getting screwed, but Taylor Swift’s family understood.

Demi Lovato defends Scooter Braun in feud with Taylor Swift

Why you gotta be so mean?

Demi Lovato is sticking up for her manager, Scooter Braun, after Taylor Swift blasted the music executive when he bought the rights to her old catalog.

“Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy,” Swift, 29, said on Tumblr. “Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”

Swift accused Braun of “bullying” her in the past during the lowest point of her career.

Coming to Braun’s defense, Lovato, 26, wrote on Instagram, “I have dealt with bad people in the industry and Scooter is not one of them. He’s a good man.”

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer said that she is “grateful” Braun, 38, took her on as a client when he did, adding that she is “always going to stay loyal to my team.”

“I value loyalty more than most people in this world and if my name is gonna be brought into conversations I’m gonna stand up for myself and the ones on my team,” she added.

In May, Lovato announced on Instagram that she had hired Braun, who also represents artists including Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

“Couldn’t be happier, inspired and excited to begin this next chapter,” she said at the time. “Thank you for believing in me and for being a part of this new journey.”

Braun’s decision to work with Lovato came less than a year after the pop star overdosed and nearly died.

On Instagram, he called her a “special person and a special talent,” and said, “I’m … we … are honored. Welcome to the family Demi.”

Bieber, who Braun discovered on YouTube at age 12, also backed his longtime manager after Swift’s reaction to his $300 million deal with her former music label, Big Machine Label Group.

“What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog?” the “Sorry” singer wrote on Instagram. “Seems to me like it was to get sympathy u also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully scooter.”

However, other stars like Halsey and Cara Delevigne came to Swift’s defense.

Delevingne, 26, commented under Bieber’s post that she wishes he “spent less time sticking up for men and more time trying to understand women and respecting their valid reactions.”

Halsey, 24, shared how Swift inspired her to write her own music, adding, “It turns my guts that no matter how much power or success a woman has in this life, you are still susceptible to someone coming along and making you feel powerless out of spite.”

Taylor Swift Blasts Scooter Braun, Bieber & SB's Wife Respond

    UPDATE

6:45 PM PDT -- Erik Logan, a member of the Big Machine board of directors, just posted the following ... "I'm not going to sit on the sidelines and allow you to re-write history and bend the truth to justify your lack of understanding of a business deal ... I also find it very interesting you use the word bully. As I watch you attempt to re-write history and parse words, all from your massive platform, I'm reminded that's what a real bully would do ... You're the real bully."
Logan goes on ... "Your power is fading, you shine is dull and this is what bully's do, they lash out."

Scott Borchetta, CEO and founder of Big Machine, just posted this ... "We first alerted all of the shareholders on Thursday, June 20th, for an official shareholder's call scheduled for Tuesday, June 25th ... Out of courtesy, I personally texted Taylor at 9:06 PM, Saturday, June 29th, to inform her prior to the story breaking ..."

He goes on to say it's possible Taylor's dad didn't tell her in advance.

4:47 PM PDT -- Taylor's rep is shooting down the idea that her father was part of the Big Machine board of directors and insisting he was simply a shareholder who opted out of a phone call with the big news. The rep told People, "Scott Swift is not on the board of directors and has never been. On June 25, there was a shareholder phone call that Scott Swift did not participate in due to a very strict NDA that bound all shareholders and prohibited any discussion at all without risk of severe penalty." The rep went on to say that Taylor's dad didn't want to withhold info from his daughter, so he didn't join the call. Taylor's camp is also refuting Yael's notion that Scott Borchetta gave Taylor a heads-up about the purchase beforehand, saying ... "Taylor found out from the news articles when she woke up before seeing any text from Scott Borchetta and he did not call her in advance."

4:21 PM PDT -- Scooter Braun's wife, Yael, just went scorched earth on Taylor Swift, calling BS on her claim that she discovered the news of Scooter's purchase like the rest of us ... and also claiming that Taylor passed on owning the rights to her old tunes. On Instagram, Yael writes, "You were given the opportunity to own your masters, you passed." Yael also confirmed what TMZ reported -- that Taylor's dad knew about the purchase ahead of time. She writes, "Your dad is a shareholder and was notified, and Borchetta [the CEO of Big Machine] personally told you before this came out. So no, you didn't find out with the world." Yael also goes on to slam Taylor's tendency to "collect and drop friends like wilted flowers." There's more, you just gotta read it yourself.

This is an Everyone Sucks situation, but I cannot bring myself to side with Scooter Braun on anything.

On the one hand: Why do Scooter Braun's biggest acts (Biebs, Lovato, Kanye) seem to be such hot messes?

On the other hand: Taylor Swift has more money the Croesus, and probably could have partnered with some consortium to acquire Big Machine themselves.

ETA: I always thought that Scooter Braun sounded like an electric razor for your ass.

Taylor should have no problem buying the rights back, but she just made it a lot tougher on herself by starting a public fight.

Yeah, I can't say I know much about the music industry, but it seems that many big stars, male and female, don't own the rights to their early music because of the contracts they signed. Duh, because when they signed them, they were just starting out and had no money or clout. Sometimes the record companies make out like bandits when a superstar emerges, but I'm guessing that's few and far between. Of course they will sell to the highest bidder. I don't see it as bullying at all.

As you mentioned, McCartney very much wanted to buy back the Beatles catalog, and had the money to do it, but MJ either got there first or outbid him (not sure exactly how it went). Sure, that sucked for McCartney because they were HIS songs and I understand him wanting them, but that's the breaks. It was business, not MJ "bullying" him.

This has nothing to do with Swift's gender either, so she can just take a seat.

I was re-reading about this in the McCartney wiki entry. Apparently, McCartney and Ono tried to buy Northern Songs (basically Lennon-McCartney's publishing rights) back in 1981. But the person running the unit that owned the songs (Lew Grade of ATV) declined the offer. Then, the parent company of ATV was sold, and ATV was sold along with it, to Robert Holmes. Robert Holmes turned around and sold ATV Music (and Northern Songs) to Michael Jackson. It's not clear whether McCartney and Ono ever had a chance to counteroffer.

Yeah, like I said, not sure how it went down but I know McCartney wanted them and MJ got them. I thought he also might have tried to buy them from MJ but MJ refused to sell.

I also seem to recall that McCartney owns a ton of music publishing rights (Buddy Holly's catalog for one). But not his own.

I don't know anything about music rights, but I do know that I have a hard time taking any adult named Scooter seriously.

I think it would be cool if Scooter represented Rascal Flatts. Would have great synergy with the retirement community.

Depends what they wanted for them though $300m??? More? It’s not inconceivable that they put an inflated price on them as they could be a golden egg for the buyer of the whole stable.
