John Mahoney, one of TV’s favorite dads, died Sunday, according to TMZ.

    He was 77.

The British actor starred in “Frasier” for 11 seasons as Martin Crane, father of Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) and Niles (David Hyde Pierce).

That role earned Mahoney two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations, although he never took home a trophy.

Mahoney began his career on the stage in England before moving stateside, where he won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a play for his role in John Guare’s “The House of Blue Leaves.”

Mahoney was best known as the Crane patriarch in “Frasier.”

He also had roles in “Tin Men,” “Eight Men Out,” “Say Anything” and “Barton Fink,” among others.

After “Frasier” ended in 2004, Mahoney returned to the stage for the Broadway revival of “Prelude to a Kiss.”

One of his most recent TV roles was as Betty White’s love interest in “Hot in Cleveland.”

    I loved him, too.

A*O, that thought crossed my mind, too, but I think he got really sick at some point?

@Mo - yeah, he was British, but I think he spent time growing up in Chicago which is where I think he got his American accent.

More googling - yeah, he was a member of the Steppenwolf Theater for a long time. And CBS and The Daily Fail are both reporting he died in a hospice in Chicago.

Awwww RIP, loved him in Fraser. I was surprised he was only 77 but it turns out he was only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammer.
If a god of love and life ever did exist... he is long since dead. Someone... something, rules in his place.

Great actor. I loved him in that movie with Cher and Dennis Quaid where he played a judge.

I loved him as the older professor who gets a drink thrown in his face in the restaurant scene from "Moonstruck"...
