Tom Cruise’s mother dies at 80
Tom Cruise‘s mother, Mary Lee South, has died at 80 years old, reps for the actor confirmed to Page Six Monday.
South, who reportedly dealt with health issues in recent years, died in her sleep last week, People reported. A memorial was held for her over the weekend at her local Church of Scientology. Cruise, 54, along with his sisters, were present for the service.
A former special education teacher, South enjoyed what would be her final Mother’s Day with Cruise’s son, Connor, 22, in Clearwater, Fl., last May. She accompanied her movie star son to the Golden Globes in 2009.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, South spoke of Cruise’s talent and how she and second husband, Jack, supported his career.
“Tom said, ‘Let me see. I really feel that this is what I want to do.’ And we both wholeheartedly agreed, because we both felt it was a God-given talent, and he should explore it because he was so enthused about it,” she said in 1986. “So to make a long story short, we gave him our blessing — and the rest is history.”
