Why a tribe in Vanuatu believes their god Prince Philip is set to visit
The Tanna islanders believe the Duke of Edinburgh, a man they see as a God, will visit them next year and - if they are exceedingly lucky - take up residence among them

In an isolated village at the end of a long muddy track, on one of the most remote specks of land in the world, dedicated believers are preparing for a visit next year from their "god" – the Duke of Edinburgh.
Followers of Vanuatu's Prince Philip Movement believe the Duke is descended from one of their spirit ancestors, and some are convinced the cyclone that ravaged the Pacific nation in March was nature's dramatic curtain-raiser to his arrival in 2016.
The villagers of Yaohnanen on the island of Tanna – where a shrine boasts framed portraits of Prince Philip that are draped with the Union Flag – believe he will, at least, visit them and, at best, take up residence among them.
Anticipation is building because a self-proclaimed prophet named Fred Nasse predicted that "a great event" would happen on Tanna in 2016 that would attract the world's attention.
New Zealander Andrew Finlay, an aid worker with the charity Tear Fund, which is assisting recovery from the devastation wrought when Cyclone Pam scored a direct hit on Tanna, said: "I was talking to an old man, an elder, who told me the event predicted by Fred would be the arrival of Prince Philip next year.
"He also believed the cyclone had been a precursor, alerting everyone to get ready for the great event."

Mr Finlay, who has just returned to his New Zealand home on leave and has previously lived on Tanna, told The Telegraph: "Prophet Fred, as he was known, died a few years ago. He was highly respected and several of his predictions came true over the years.
"He predicted a large lake around the volcano would drain, and it did. He predicted there would be no cyclones for seven years, and that came true.
"So when he predicted that the world would converge on Tanna for a great event in 2016, they have no reason to doubt it. It's a short leap to connect that to Prince Philip."
The Prince Philip Movement, which these days has its own Facebook page, started with a visit the Queen and Duke made to Vanuatu in 1974.
A warrior named Chief Jack Naiva, who died in 2009, was one of the paddlers of a war canoe that greeted the royal yacht Britannia at the nation's capital, Port Vila.
Chief Jack became convinced that Prince Philp was the descendant of a Tanna spiritual ancestor.
"I saw him standing on the deck in his white uniform," Chief Jack is on record as saying. "I knew then that he was the true messiah."
Prince Philip has exchanged gifts with the islanders, including sending them a signed portrait of himself.
In 2007, Channel 4's reality series Meet the Natives showed five Tanna men on a visit to Britain. Their trip culminated in an off-screen audience with the Prince at Buckingham Palace.
And last year, Princess Anne became the first member of the royal family to set foot on Tanna, one of 83 islands that make up the scattered archipelago, during a visit to Vanuatu.
Tear Fund's Mr Finlay, who has been in Tanna helping locals to replant their ruined coffee crops and teaching them how to grow peanuts, told The Telegraph that other islanders, who are followers of the John Frum Cargo Cult, see the arrival of aid from the outside world in the wake of Cyclone Pam as the fulfilment of another prophesy.
Up to half of Tanna's more than 30,000 people are thought to be followers of the Cargo Cult, which began early last century when the islanders first encountered modern Western society.
Proselytising by Presbyterian missionaries only served to bolster its support and the cult firmly took hold after US troops arrived during the Second World War, bringing with them such luxuries as lorries, radios, watches, medicines and Coca-Cola.

The name John Frum is said to have originated with a GI who told natives he was "John from America", and the belief has persisted that the mysterious John would one day return and shower the islanders with gifts.
"People aren't surprised at what is happening," said Mr Finlay.
"They now have an airport, education and other things their grandfathers prophesied would come.
"The islanders have a generous, communal lifestyle, they share everything with each other, and they believe that John Frum wants to share his possessions with them."
February 15 each year is celebrated on Tanna as John Frum Day – the day followers believe their messiah will return – and islanders hold a military-style parade beneath the Stars and Stripes, daubing the letters "USA" in red paint on their chests.
Anthropologists say that while it is easy to mock the islanders' beliefs, it is their way of coping with the intrusion of the First World and its trappings on what for centuries was an undisturbed, traditional way of life.
Discovered in 1774 by Captain James Cook, in 1906 the islands became the New Hebrides, a curious colonial hybrid jointly administered by Britain and France until independence in 1980.
It is highly unlikely Prince Philip, at the age of 93, is contemplating a trip to Vanuatu next year.
But 10,000 miles from Buckingham Palace, the villagers of Yaohnanen are unswerving in their belief that 2016 will be a memorable year for Tanna, and that the Duke will be at the centre of it.

And the John Frum Cult. That actually made me sad. They are waiting for John From the USA to return. Seems like we ought to be able to make that happen.
I'd love to see Prince Phillip show up. I know he's too old but how can he resist? They think he's a god!

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) is all smiles while making her way inside the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist on Tuesday (February 27) in London, England.
The 36-year-old pregnant royal then visited St. Thomas’ Hospital where she took part in a roundtable discussion and delivered a speech to mark the launch of the Nursing Now campaign.
“This campaign means a lot to me personally. My great-grandmother and grandmother were both volunteer nurses,” Kate said during her speech (via People). “They would have learned first-hand from working with the Voluntary Aid Detachment and the Red Cross about the care and compassion that sometimes only nurses can provide.”
“Your dedication and professionalism are awe-inspiring. I have been struck today by the enormous range of responsibilities that nurses have, not only in providing access to healthcare, but also in terms of providing a holistic approach to caring for our physical and mental health. You also promote good health and disease prevention,” Kate continued. “I would like to congratulate and thank all nurses everywhere on what you achieve on a daily basis. The difference you make should not go unrecognized.”
Those are nice pics. Finally Meghan is wearing a dress!

The Duchess of Cambridge put on a glamorous display in spite of the snowy weather as she arrived to visit the Victorian Giants:The Birth of Art Photography exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London
Sorry but that dress is ugly. I was relieved to scroll down and see it wasn't long, otherwise I'd be having pregnant-Kim-K-wearing-her-couch flashbacks.
Was Kate a smoker? Her face looks weathered or maybe she's just tired
yes she was. I don't know if she still is.
She's far from my favorite royal, but Kate looks so much better with a few extra pounds. Not as haggard and gaunt.
She's looked the best she ever has during this pregnancy.
That poor Prince Phillip worshipping tribe. Bless their hearts.
Is now the time for me to confess that I really like Kate? She just seems like she'd be cool to kick back and have a cup of coffee with. And she does always seem generally nice and happy. If I had to go out in a fancy wardrobe and high heels and have my picture taken everyday while also bring 7 months pregnant, I would look like an evil witch in every picture or break down crying.
I've always adored Kate. I mean, I took the day off from work and had a princess tea party with my closest friends to celebrate their wedding, so it goes deep! I remember during the wedding, shortly after they were married and doing their parade she had looked over at Will and said, "I'm so happy right now". It always stuck with me because I know there was that whole "Waity Katie" thing (I don't think Americans were as on that train) and I know a lot of people feel that she hunted Will down and kind of weaseled her way into his life but, it's obviously what she wanted for her life so how is it any different than a woman working her way up the office chain and going after what they want?
Either way I think all of that is BS, who cares if you're willing to wait for your significant other to accomplish things before getting married and I think they genuinely love and enjoy being with each other so I don't buy into her being a weasel. She definitely isn't as interesting to me anymore, but I still get excited to see updates and new pictures of her and her adorable spawn.
