Hackers Publish Nude Pictures on Leslie Jones’s Website

By KATIE ROGERS and JONAH ENGEL BROMWICHAUG. 24, 2016

Leslie Jones attending the Los Angeles premiere of “Ghostbusters” in Hollywood on July 9.CreditJordan Strauss/Invision, via Associated PressLeslie Jones, a co-star of this year’s “Ghostbusters” movie who has beenbesieged in the past month by online abusers who have targeted her appearance and her race, was victimized again on Wednesday when her personal website appeared to have been hacked.
The hackers inserted a picture of the gorilla Harambe on the site, and exposed what appeared to be explicit photos of the actress, along with pictures of her driver’s license and a passport, and images of her with stars like Rihanna, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West.
The website was taken offline after the hack, which was initially reported by TMZ.

An email to a representative for Ms. Jones was not immediately returned on Wednesday.
The website, which had contained information about her comedy career and her past work in film, appeared to have been retooled to display the personal photos and information.

There was no way to independently confirm that the photos were of Ms. Jones and whether the identification documents were real, but the address on the driver’s license appeared to correspond with information about Ms. Jones that is available through public records.
Ms. Jones, 48, had spent much of the past month battling online trolls who sent her a stream of racist imagery, pornography and abusive language. She briefly left Twitter, but later returned to tweet about the Rio Olympics.

In the hours after Ms. Jones’s site was taken offline, high-profile defenders offered public support.
“These acts against Leslie Jones are sickening,” the musician Questlovewrote in a post on Twitter. “It’s racist & sexist. It’s disgusting. This is hate crimes. This ain’t ‘kids joshing round.’ ”

Others, including Paul Feig, the director of the “Ghostbusters” film, the comedian Patton Oswalt and the singer Katy Perry defended the actress on Twitter.

Brendesha Tynes, a professor of education and psychology at the University of Southern California who specializes in social media and cyberbullying, said in an interview that part of what was fueling the attacks against Ms. Jones was a “serious anti-black woman problem in the U.S.”

Dr. Tynes noted the criticism levied at the Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglaswhile she was competing in Rio, and said, “Even the slightest perceived infraction leads people to get bullied.”

Ms. Jones herself had stood up for Ms. Douglas while in Brazil.

Sameer Hinduja, the co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and a professor of Criminology at Florida-Atlantic University, applauded Ms. Jones for standing up to those who have victimized her over the past several months.

“She was an advocate for others that have been victimized and haven’t spoken up, and that has led to more attention, and has, perhaps indirectly, led to policy change on Twitter’s part,” he said in an interview, referring tothe company’s taking action against some of the accounts that had hurled racist insults at Ms. Jones.

He added that Ms. Jones’s willingness to remain an active social-media presence may have made her a more tempting target for bullies and hackers.
“Some of those that cyberbully attempt to identify something that you’re particularly sensitive about, and because they know that it will get under your skin,” Dr. Hinduja said. “Or they’re just biased and intolerant, as perhaps was the case considering the racial hatred in some of the attacks on Leslie Jones.”
Dr. Tynes said that the hack on Wednesday felt particularly harrowing after Ms. Jones had seemed to prevail over those who attacked her earlier this summer, elevating her public presence by using social media sites such as Twitter and Snapchat prolifically during the Olympics.
“I have to say, as a human being, it’s heartbreaking,” Dr. Tynes said. “As a researcher, I haven’t seen in the adolescents I study anything this heinous.”
She said that attacks like these could have serious consequences on a victim’s mental health, including symptoms of depression and anxiety.
“I’m hoping that people will once again rally behind her, show her love, and hopefully serve as a buffer against some of the potentially negative consequences,” Dr. Tynes said. “I’m at a loss for words, but I do know that people will rally behind her once again.”

    ENOUGH

The Hacking of Leslie Jones Exposes Misogynoir at Its Worst

The harassment and hatred the ‘Ghostbusters’ star has endured all summer is emblematic of a certain kind of misogyny: that directed specifically against black women in pop culture.

Leslie Jones has given us so much, from hilarious Game of Thrones recaps toGhostbusters to her entire Twitter presence. She even provided a ray of hope at the Rio Olympics, patriotically swimming upstream against the river of shit and the riptide of white privilege that is Ryan Lochte. For summoning the kind of unbridled cheer usually reserved for Channing Tatum’s personal emails, Jones has been rewarded with a flood of hateful vitriol. The latest, ugliest attack came on Wednesday, when hackers covered the comedian’s personal website with images of her passport and driver’s license, alongside naked photos allegedly cribbed from her iCloud. They also uploaded a tribute video to immortal meme Harambe, likely as a racist troll.

Leslie Jones’s attackers are proving disturbingly persistent. While Paul Feig’sGhostbusters reboot triggered a hate campaign for having a largely female cast, Jones in particular provoked the ire of the alt-right. These meme-wielding white supremacists were enraged by the prospect of gender-flipping the popular franchise, let alone casting a black woman in one of the starring roles. Unsurprisingly, Cheeto-in-Chief Donald Trump was among the first to publicly condemn the film. Over a year later, the Playboy-loving family values candidate took to Instagram for a pop culture rant, fuming, “And now they’re making Ghostbusters with only women. What’s going on?!”

Rationally speaking, a Hollywood blockbuster is not a personal affront. But when you’re genuinely scared that the white man is losing a war against diversity and gender equality, there’s really no limit to what you can misconstrue as a personal attack. This is the sort of uninformed terror that gives Trump rallies their particular brand of je ne sais quoi—a toxic cocktail of xenophobia, misogyny, racism, homophobia, and sadness. Now picture that teeming mass of Trumpian inhumanity hidden behind computer screens, trolling to their hearts’ content—or until they run out of data on their parents’ family plan.

By July 18, Jones was living in a “personal hell,” largely orchestrated by alt-right commenter Milo Yiannopoulos. Yiannopolous, a “professional troll” who makes all millennials look bad, tweeted some truly disgusting things at the comedian. Along with his dedicated troll army, the unfunny asshole doctored fake tweets from Leslie, wrote disgusting reviews of Ghostbusters, and sent Jones obscene, racist images, including Photoshopped gorillas. Jones responded by exposing her attackers on the internet and pleading with Twitter to increase its security. When help wasn’t forthcoming, she quit Twitter altogether, “With tears and a very sad heart.” It was a dark day for the Twitter community and a frustrating victory for hateful cowards with amateur Photoshop skills.

In the wake of Jones’s harassment, Internet admirers took up the hashtag #LoveForLeslieJ to advocate for change on the infamously under-regulated social media platform. In response, “woke” Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey finally lived up to the promise of his T-shirt, reaching out to Leslie personally and permanently banning her chief abuser. Yiannopoulos wrote an inflammatory response, which hardly anyone read because he couldn’t tweet it. Seems about right.

Jones later went on Late Night with Seth Meyers to discuss the incident. “What’s scary about the whole thing is that the insults didn’t hurt me,” Jones confessed. “Unfortunately, I’m used to the insults, but what scared me was the injustice of a gang of people jumping against you for such a sick cause.” She added, “Everybody has an opinion and it all comes at you at one time—and they really believe in what they believe in—and it’s so mean. It’s so gross and mean.”

Jones returned to Twitter on July 21, ushering in a short-lived golden age of glorious Olympics content and good times. After the comedian’s ebullient amateur coverage of the Rio Games earned her an even larger social media following, NBC invited Jones to cover the Games in person. In Rio, Jones quickly joined the ranks of Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles as the 2016 Olympics MVPs. She cheered on Kerri Walsh Jennings, exhibited the appropriate reaction to meeting the Final Five, and brought some much-needed attention to the art of synchronized swimming. While Jones alone couldn’t distract from the spoiled antics of a swole baby with a bad dye job, she brought us some much-needed cheer in the midst of Ryan Lochte’s career implosion. She even converted her history with virtual losers into a Twitter superpower, coming to Gabby Douglas’s rescue after the veteran gymnast was targeted by racist trolls.

The most recent attack against Leslie Jones isn’t just proof that no good deed goes unpunished. The horrific hack, which happened more than a month after peak Ghostbusters backlash, just goes to show the depths of racism and misogyny reserved for black women in the public eye. While Paul Feig and his accomplished cast faced their fair share of criticism, Leslie Jones has borne the brunt of Ghostbusters outrage. It’s a prime example of misogynoir, the term coined by scholar Moya Bailey to describe misogyny directed toward black women in American popular culture. Misogynoir reminds us that while misogyny might be universal, it is not felt or administered uniformly. The zeitgeist is riddled with misogynoir; Nicki Minaj pointed out one example inher famous takedown of the 2015 VMAs, tweeting, “Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.”

As a famous black woman, Leslie Jones was the most appealing target for racist, misogynistic trolls. And while countless celebrities, including director Paul Feig, have voiced unwavering support for the comedian, many of Jones’s white Ghostbusters co-stars have remained silent—a reminder of white women’s ability to opt out of certain conversations, as Jones continues to struggle with the aftermath of this multi-pronged attack.

I was on her Twitter the night she first was attacked by these awful, racist, misogynistic trolls. They said really awful things. Leslie even left Twitter for a bit but things seemed to be going OK, she had the best twitter feed for the Rio Olympics, she was so happy and enthusiastic for the US team. Now she was hacked by these same guys. All because of that Milo guy from Twitter who was a right wing troll that had a huge following, he attacked her with lies then sent his followers after her and they haven't stopped since.
The original story was on TMZ, there are about 5000 comments most of them just horrendous, I know they always are but these are especially vile.

Same here. I wasn't going to watch the Ghostbusters remake because I had such fond memories of the original but damn it, I'm actually going to buy it on DVD now. I also hope that someone pulls their finger out of their arse and not only identifies these inadequate pricks but takes some heavy duty legal action against them too.

I just love her on SNL. No one should have have to deal with this. Is this really allowed on Twitter? I would think stuff like this would get someone banned.

This needs to stop. Not just for things like this happening to celebrities, but regular folks too. Serious criminal charges need to be addressed to bullies. If something happens, these bullies will stop. I'm sure there are ways to find out who is posting this stuff. If they can track down child porn rings, clearly they can track down these hackers and bullies.

I don't know much about Jones but she seems like a decent soul. Why would anyone target her at all? Or anyone, for that matter? What does it say about society that these freaks feel secure enough to violate all human decency and direct such vitriol towards someone? If we do not stand up to these thugs every single time a fellow human being is bullied, humiliated, excluded or minimized I fear for our future.

^^ His pet trolls didn't take it well when he was kicked off Twitter for being a hateful little shit stain on the panties of humanity so it really wouldn't surprise me. He quite obviously loathes women (and was a leader in the whole 'Gamergate' shitstorm against female players) and has been gloating about the latest in the hate campaign on Snapchat.

It beggars belief, doesn't it? And the crazy thing is that if all the White Supremacist Ultra Conservative crazies got control of the world and dragged us back to the dark ages like they seem to want to then poor widdle Milo would soon find that his fellow hate mongers turning on him. A gay man who likes big, black cock? Burn that Godless son of a whore!
