Billy Bush plagued by ‘Mean Girls’ mentality at ‘Today’

Did Billy Bush land his breaking Ryan Lochte interview because he’s been cast out from the “Today” show talent clique?

Newest “Today” show member Bush brought in the scoop of the Olympics so far when he randomly spotted gold-medal swimmer Lochte in Rio on Sunday, and interviewed him about being dramatically robbed at gunpoint.

Sources told us lucky Bush got the story in part because he’s been a “Today” outcast. “It can be a bit ‘Mean Girls,’ ” said a source of the cliques at “Today.” Former “Access Hollywood” host Bush just joined “Today” after landing the job in May.

Our source said instead of bonding with Matt Lauer and company, “Billy’s been hanging with his ‘Access Hollywood’ co-host Kit Hoover and colleagues” in Rio. “He was going shopping with her, and that’s when she spotted Lochte,” said the source. “No one at ‘Today’ could believe Billy got this interview.”

A source said of any “Today” staff socializing, “Billy is more of a frat guy . . . He gets boisterous when he goes out. You can’t just go out with Billy and have tapas and relax.” The source added that Bush wasn’t being included in “Today” after-hours fraternizing. But a “Today” insider insisted that Bush has been included in group dinners Thursday to Saturday, and a staff surfing outing.

Either way, after his scoop, Bush explained on-air to a sour-faced Natalie Morales and Al Roker he was with Hoover “to do a little shopping” when “Kit says, ‘Is that Lochte?!’ ” He added that he had just gone hiking with Hoover and “my old executive producer” of “Access Hollywood,” Rob Silverstein. Upon seeing Lochte, Bush’s first call was to Silverstein to get a camera crew — not to “Today” or Olympics executive producer Jim Bell — before going the quicker iPhone route.

Bush and Morales have also been appearing on “Access Hollywood” in Brazil.

Good-humored Bush told us of his Rio social life: “I’m hosting my own little dinner wars down here. Whomever picks the better restaurant, that’s who I’m with. Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and the other, bronze. Or something like that.”

Everyone on the Today show sounds awful from Bryant Gumbel back in the day, all the way through his best bud Matt Lauer. It's funny that women are always accused of being catty but on that show it seems to be the men who are bitches but aren't usually called out on it like that Deborah Norville/Jane Pauley thing from back in the 80's.

I imagine "hanging" out with Matt Lauer would be nothing but hearing how great Matt Lauer is. Ya, not thanks. I have always like Billy Bush, now I like him more.

I had no idea that he had left AH and moved onto the Today show. No surprise that they are clicky and no doubt Lauer leads the pack.

Strange too that the Brazilian government doesn't' believe the Lochte story and tried to get his passport and deny him leaving. Apparently the two swimmers have differing accounts of what happened. WIH? Either it happened or it didn't and what does he have to gain by making it up. He's already a multi-medal Olympian, to what gain could he possible have by making this all up. IDK but somewhere Brian Williams ears are ringing.

^^Brazillian authorities got involved because itt happened in a part of town, where you most likely go and have a gun put to your face, when you'ere trying to buy drugs or prostitutes.

Apparently two other swimmers were pulled off their plane. Drama.

Brazilian Authorities Pull Two US Swimmers Off Flight Out Of Rio [Update]

This whole story about US swimmers Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen maybe or maybe not getting robbed at gunpoint by men who were maybe posing as Brazilian police officers is fishy and riddled with inconsistencies. Brazilian police cast doubt on Lochte’s story, and earlier today, a Brazilian judge ordered Lochte and Feigen to remain in Brazil to answer questions about the alleged robbery. Lochte is already out of the country, but apparently, Bentz and Conger got pulled off their plane by Brazilian authorities. They were not initially named by the judge, but are apparently now stuck in Rio.

We’ll update this post as more information becomes available.

Update, 10:11 p.m. EDT: The New York Times has more from the tarmac:

Agents from Brazil’s Federal Police, an investigative force that oversees Brazil’s borders, removed Conger and Bentz from an American Airlines plane on the tarmac at Rio’s Galeão International Airport, according to local news reports. Investigators from Rio’s Tourism Police had asked for their passports to be seized so they could respond to questioning in the case.

Shortly after they were removed from the plane, the two men were shown on the Globo television network as they were escorted to a police station in the airport. They declined to talk to television reporter at the entrance to the station.

Holy crap, shit getting real! IDK but I suppose the truth will come out shortly. I still don't get why any one of them would lie about this. But, stranger things have happened.

Well, it looks to be cleared up now. They were drunk as skunks and vandalised a gas station bathroom door. The armed security at the gas station confronted them. They lied, because it looks a lot better to be a robbery victim than a vandalising drunk. That's an appalling behaviour when you're out representing your country. Three of them are back in USA and one was made to pay a fine.

Way too old to be acting like fools. I don't understand why they made up that story. Other than they were afraid of getting in trouble. Would we have even known this happened if they hadn't opened their yaps?

Well, Lochte isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed to say the least. Is it possible he thought they were being robbed by the security guards. Unfortunately he happened to tell a journalist, and it became a big story, before he sobered up and realised he's a legitimate idiot.

No. They were confronted by the station attendant who then called the security guards over and then called the police. The security guards prevented them from leaving, made them cough up for the damage and then they were out of there before the police arrived.

^^Ok, I wanted to give him the benefit of the dumb.

Here's the requisite non-apology apology, in which he does not apologise for lying or vandalising. Poor Billy Bush. His big scoop turned out to be a lie.
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BJSwyLJBoSH/

I want to apologize for my behavior last weekend — for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics. I waited to share these thoughts until it was confirmed that the legal situation was addressed and it was clear that my teammates would be arriving home safely.
It’s traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country - with a language barrier - and have a stranger point a gun at your and demand money to let you leave, but regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors, and the hosts of this great event. I am very proud to represent my country in Olympic competition and this was a situation that could and should have been avoided. I accept responsibility for my role in this happening and have learned some valuable lessons.
I am grateful for my USA Swimming teammates and the USOC, and appreciate all of the efforts of the IOC, the Rio ‘16 Host Committee, and the people of Brazil who welcomed us to Rio and worked so hard to make sure that these Olympic Games provided a lifetime of great new memories.
There has already been too much said and too many valuable resources dedicated to what happened last weekend, so I hope we spend our time celebrating the great stories and performances of these Games and look ahead to celebrating future successes.
