Celine Dion's husband's long battle with cancer ended Thursday morning ... he died at their home in Las Vegas.

Rene Angelil was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998. His health got so bad last year that Celine took a leave of absence from her Las Vegas show at Caesars Palace.

Sources close to Celine tell us Rene's death was completely unexpected because recently he's felt much better. In fact, we're told he and Celine had planned business meetings together for today.

Wow, wonder how she'll cope with this loss. He was her mentor, producer and husband for most of her life.

Wow, I was just listening to Celine Dion music, right now. Celebs are dropping like flies.

I'm going to try and make sure I don't accidentally do something famous on the drive home tonight....

Creepy what it says that he was feeling better and it came out of the blue (not that I necessarily believe it). It's like the gates of Hades have opened and no one is safe.

    At least he wasn't 69.
Poor Celine, he groomed her and he was all she ever knew. This will be really hard for her.

Sad for his family. They seemed like they had a great love story.

From what I've been reading and hearing recently about people with terminal cancer, it seems like it's common shortly before death to suddenly appear to have a burst of energy. Things like after not being able to eat because they're so ill, they become ravenous just before death. Or after being listless or comatose, they are suddenly sitting up and chatting as if nothing was wrong. Shortly after they all die. Very sad. Cancer sucks

Well...I always found their "love story" pretty creepy, but they were together 20+ years so that's something. It will be interesting to see how she copes. I'm sure his lengthy illness was hard on her. Who knows, maybe she'll pull a Bo Derek and find herself a hot younger man.

I hope so Trixie! I know it was "expected" to some extent, but its crappy especially with such a young family, at least his older kids could have had chance to get to know him better.

I researched his after I read your post and found a thread of hospice nurses talking about their experiences with their dying patients. They all mentioned the burst of energy, eating more, requesting to talk to lived ones, even running around the house after being unable to get out of bed for 6 months, etc. The stories were quite interesting. And it wasn't just cancer patients.

Some of those that passed away were the same. All of a sudden they were energetic and sociable. One even came out of a coma for a day. It was like the final good bye.
