Elizabeth Taylor Ran an UndergroundÂ*AIDS Pharmaceutical Ring to Provide Drugs to PatientsÂ*

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, model and AIDS activist Kathy Ireland said that Elizabeth Taylor ran an underground network to provide experimental HIV medication to patients. Ireland told the show:

“Talk about fearless in her home in Bel-Air. It was a safe house. A lot of the work that she did, it was illegal, but she was saving lives. It was in a time when it was not something to do. Business associates pleaded with her, ‘Leave this thing alone.’ She received death threats. Friends hung up on her when she asked for help, but something that I love about Elizabeth is her courage.”

Drug rings geared toward procuring experimental HIV/AIDS drugs in 1980s America weren’t exactly unusual—the film The Dallas Buyer’s Clubimmortalized Ron Woodroof, one of the most written about organizers—but they were still illegal. HIV and AIDS were still deeply misunderstood and lack of federal oversight (and near denial of the existence of the diseases) stymied medical and drug research, making a diagnosis a practical death sentence. The buying rings often brought in drugs from foreign countries like Mexico, Switzerland, and Sweden that were still labeled experimental by the FDA (the FDA wouldn’t approve early HIV treatments like AZT until 1987 and after approval there was often a long waiting list to obtain the incredibly expensive drug).

While Ireland didn’t elaborate on the work that Taylor did, it’s still an incredible story that speaks to Taylor’s commitment to HIV and AIDS awareness; particularly at a time when that kind of activism was deeply unpopular. She began raising money for research in 1985 and, in 1986, Taylor testified before Congress on behalf of Ryan White. She founded the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991 and, according to ET, the organization has since raised millions of dollars for research and awareness.

I loved Liz. This sounds so much like her. I had dismissed her ages ago as a spoiled movie queen until I found out that she volunteered to show up at a charity event in Harlem after MISS ROSS snubbed the agency holding the event. And they raised so much money because she showed up. Loved her ever since.

Every time I think of her as a spoiled movie star (and she was) I remember how much good she did for AIDS when so many people looked the other way.
I have some famous friends and I have mostly not famous friends.

She was spoiled, she lived in a parallel universe and she was kind of nuts. But she also did wonderful things. Having said that, I'll never forget the charity dinner including big name stars like Elizabeth, Shirley MacLaine, Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis Jr., Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, Burt Reynolds and Diahann Carroll. Burt Lancaster read a letter of Rock's who was too ill to attend. There were people in the 2500 VIP crowd who were wearing millions of bucks in jewelry, yet I believe they only raised one million $'s. Rock died 2 weeks later. I was shocked that so many rich folks only raised such a small amount.

The guy who runs the Find-A-Death website, that monitors dead and dying celebs - for some strange reason he hates Liz. Something to do with Roddy McDowell's death. Roddy didn't want any fuss to be made, just cremated and that was that. But Liz disobeyed his wishes and had a memorial service at her house. But there were other reasons, yet he didn't elaborate.

Liz was nuts and spoiled but she was one of the few celebs who got her hands dirty for a charitable cause, and not just any cause, by one that was DEEPLY unpopular at the time. I can't even think of a comparison amongst today's stars. Most of them, including St. Jolie, have highly polished philanthropic endeavors but it's work that burnishes rather than damages their images. Liz worked hard for AIDS causes at a time when to be associated with it was poisonous to a public image. She was not just a charitable "face," but she also worked behind the scenes and all but stopped her career to devote all her time to it.

A memorial service is for the survivors & loved ones, not really for the deceased. Not sure why anyone would object to friends getting together to remember a loved one.
