Ugly Chicks Can't Do My Job

    ... And I'm Not Kidding

    GOTTA LOOK GOODBBC

The Dalai Lama is doubling down on his jaw-dropping comments about a woman eventually stepping into his shoes -- insisting she better be hot if she wants his gig.
TDL was talking to a BBC reporter about an interview he did years and years ago, where he said, "If a female Dalai Lama comes, their face should be very attractive."
Check out the new video -- the BBC reporter is clearly uncomfortable and thinks the Dalai's gotta be joking, but the Buddhist spiritual leader stood his ground ... and, believe it or not, probably made it worse.
The Dalai Lama frequently refers to himself as a feminist. He just has a funny way of showing it.

I've always thought he was a massive fraud who doesn't deserve the fawning adulation he seems to generate.

Totally random story but when he was visiting our city a few years ago, he was at a meeting hall / conference center that happen to be right next to a Starbucks. I don't know why but he took the wrong door and was just walking through the Starbucks as if it would be the most normal thing on earth. So my friend was there, ordering a coffee, and Dalai Lama would just randomly passing her and greeting her. She and everyone else just stood there and were like... WTF did just happen?

He's said some pretty sexist things in the past too IIRC.

eta I just googled it (sorry can't post links) and he was homophobic rather than sexist. Nice.

I've been telling my buddhist-lite friends for years, that Dalai Lama is no different than any other misogynistic/homophobic religious wingnut. Now, I'll just forward them this interview, next time someone gushes about the virtues of the holy lama.

There was a great clip where Stuttering John (from the Howard Stern show) had sneaked into a press conference that Richard Gere was hosting for the Dalai Lama. Pretending to be a member of the press, John asked, "Do people ever say to you, 'Hello Dalai'?" The room erupted in laughter.

I'm around Tibetan Buddhist monks, and Tibetans in exile in general, often because my husband does some work for them. The truth is it's a sexist culture, and traditionally a very hierarchical culture. The Tibetans are mostly very easy to get along with, very down-to-earth, good sense of humor. Some of them are incredibly intellectual and very open-minded. Some are not.

The Dalai Lama is not my favorite guy (haven't met him personally but have heard him /seen him speak a few times). I like some of the other monks better. My least favorite thing the Dalai Lama said regarding women was something about how feminism is fine but that women should "do" things rather than just complain -- I'm paraphrasing. That really pissed me off, since any disempowered person has first to articulate a position in order to bootstrap, and for fuck's sake what does the Dalai Lama do but talk, talk, talk all the time. That's his fucking job. I wish he'd just not answer questions about women anymore, because he's quite ignorant on the subject. Or at least expresses himself so clumsily on the topic that it's hard to witness.

I see the Dalai Lama as a political leader more than as a spiritual one. Ofc, in Tibetan culture they are one and the same thing, but if you see him as a less fucked up version of George W. Bush, you'll be in the ballpark imo.
