Default Devo's Jerry Casale marries on 9/11 - sparks outrage with Twin Towers wedding cake

Devo band-member Jerry Casale sparks outrage for his Twin Towers-themed wedding... including a cake of the buildings and BOX CUTTERS as favors

    • Casale and his bride Krista Napp were married on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Michael's restaurant in Santa Monica, California
    • For their wedding cake, the couple's dessert was made in the shape of the Twin Towers
    • Each guest was also given a box cutter as a keepsake, as well as seating guards with a box cutter engraved on the paper
    • Casale told TMZ that he had nothing to do with the wedding cake, and that it was a joke hatched by one of his friends

Jerry Casale, one of the founding members of Devo, has caused controversy online after photos surfaced of his 9/11-themed wedding cake.
The 67-year-old got married Krista Napp at Michael's Restaurant in Santa Monica, California on Friday - the 14th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 innocent Americans.
In pictures from the reception, Casale and his bride are seen beaming next to their cake in the shape of the Twin Towers, each with one of their faces plastered to the side.
And it didn't stop there. In addition to the cake, guests were each given their own pair of real box cutters as party favors, as well as seating cards with their names over an engraved box cutter.

After the pictures emerged online, Casale recorded a video denying his part in the distasteful dessert.
Casale told TMZ that he got married on 9/11 by 'chance' because it was the last Friday he could get married before his marriage license expired. He says he and his bride got married at the Beverly Hills Courthouse and then held a small reception for about 20 friends at Michael's.
'One of the friends surprised me with the cake, and these place settings, and it was because they thought it was really macabre that I was getting married on 9/11.
'And I was like "no, it's just arbitrary and Krista and I are the Twin Towers of love" - you know, making a joke about love conquering all,' Casale said, adding that everyone ate the cake.

Sources told TMZ that the theme of the wedding reception wasn't surprising considering the couple's dark sense of humor.
One guest insisted to the gossip site that Jerry has a 'real heart as an artist, and is a super sweet guy.
But commenters online weren't so forgiving.
Twitter user Tim Baker wrote: 'This might be the most offensive thing I've seen in years, and it takes a lot of offend me.'
Daniel Wyher added that it was 'absolutely offensive' and 'if I was invited I'd leave the reception immediately.'
While not much is known about Casale's wife Krista, pictures posted online suggest she may have been a Devo superfan before meeting her husband.

In October 2008, Napp was snapped attended a Devo concert in Ohio decked out in a red energy dome hat. In one of the photos snapped at the concert, Napp is seen sitting down for an interview with a crew filming a documentary on the band, and is described by the photographer as a fan.
Just three years later, her LinkedIn profile says she relocated from Ohio to Los Angeles where she continues to work as a production assistant for a commercial company.

Public records indicate that Napp is 26 years old and attended Casale's alma mater of Kent State University.
The photos of Casale's offensive wedding come just days after Entourage star Adrian Grenier sparked a similar fury online for posting a message on Instagram, criticizing America's response to the terrorist attacks.
The post reads: 'RIP the 2,996 Americans who died on 9/11. RIP the 1,455,590 innocent Iraqis who died during the U.S. invasion for something they didn't do.'

Melissa Joan Hart Apologizes For 9/11 Free Shipping

    GossipCop, Saturday, September 12, 2015, 7:27am (PDT)

    By Shari Weiss

Melissa Joan Hart is apologizing for offering free shipping in honor of 9/11 for purchases made from her King Of Harts clothing line.

As Gossip Cop reported, Hart ranted on Friday morning, the 14th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, that there wasn’t enough coverage of the tragedy. She complained that television news networks should be doing more to pay tribute, even saying that if the Kardashians can be covered “24/7,” there should be one day “dedicated” to 9/11 coverage. Hart later in the day then announced King Of Harts would give free shipping to anyone who used the code “911.”

That did NOT go over well, as Hart was accused of exploiting the holiday for her own personal, financial gain. She initially addressed the backlash for her comments and discount on Friday night, tweeting, “I hope those that know what I stand for know that I never meant to have the attention turn to me today. I was merely venting.” She issued a more formal apology, however, on Saturday morning.

“I want to apologize for yesterday’s free shipping post. It was meant to be my small way to give something back. I wanted to cover the shipping charges as a heartfelt gesture, not an exploit of 9/11,” Hart wrote on Facebook. “I see now how it was interpreted and viewed as being in bad taste. I apologize. It was a mistake.”

Hart’s post concluded, “I did not want to draw attention away from what the focus of yesterday should have been. And for that, I am sad.”

How do the two even compare? The Casale wedding was tasteless in the extreme. Twin Towers wedding cakes and box cutters?

FFS, you'd have to be on another fucking planet or a complete fucking moron not to see the problem with that.

Whatever. Tasteless and offensive? Maybe. But it was a private event and the only reason it got out is some guest leaked it to the press. Plus, it's devo, their whole shtick is in part inspired by the Kent state shootings. People need to unclench and stop getting outraged over shit that doesn't affect them in any way.

not sure how someone could defend this wedding, but mock the texas cheerleaders about their 'tribute' to 9/11.

    tasteless, sure. but also dumb.

i don't see the humor in a twin towers wedding cake. but fortunately, not my wedding, so don't really care.

It's their wedding, they can do whatever they want. If people don't like it, that's their problem, not the bride and grooms.

Why would anyone think that 9/11 would be a fun, festive wedding theme? Would someone have a Columbine wedding with trench coats, guns and a school for a wedding cake and people would just say, hey whatever, you're just too uptight if you find that offensive? If you lost someone that day, this isn't funny at all. It's in really poor taste, so fuck them for thinking it's fun to celebrate people's misery.

sure but it's a private event. it only made it to the press because some guest leaked it to stoke the public's thirst for daily internet outrage.
it would be a different matter if it were the theme of devo's next tour or something but it's not.

Well, all I can say is that if two people find this an appropriate wedding theme they are definitely soulmates.

Oh that is quite tacky and tasteless. Yup, no defending that one. That's just like my ex running around his front yard naked screaming about how he is "napalm girl" fucking tacky and wrong on so many levels. Shit like that just isn't cute or funny. Private or not, you just wonder "who does that?!?!?!?" That's like the "too soon" halloween costumes of Irwin and shit like that, it's just gross that someone has to actually go out of their way to be offensive, it's quite easy to do without being such a try hard.

Private event or not... there's nothing clever, artistic, funny or cute about such a tasteless display of insensitivity.

Did his friend also bring the box cutter party favours. And order the box cutter place cards?
At least own your asinine party planning.

I wonder what the drinks were like - cocktails with ice cubes shaped like Syrian refugees?
