An Australian television star has been charged with historical child sex offences dating back to the 1980s.

Maggie Kirkpatrick, best known for her role as tough prison officer Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson in the series Prisoner, has been charged by Victoria Police's Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team with two counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency with a person under the age of 16.

The newspaper said it understands the charges stem from an incident involving a 13-year-old girl in the 1980s, and that the girl is not connected to the entertainment industry.

Kirkpatrick, who lives in Sydney, told the newspaper she has vowed to clear her name when she appears in court next month.

"I need to go to court to have this ridiculous situation quashed," the 71-year-old told the Herald Sun.

"Allegations have been levelled at me, yes. Are they true? Absolutely not."

Kirkpatrick has also appeared on Hey Dad!, Home and Away, Blue Heelers and had a major role in the theatre production Wicked.

The matter is due to be heard at Melbourne Magistrate's Court on August 19.

Australian Actress Known for Playing a Molester on TV Is Convicted of Child Sex Abuse

An Australian actress known for her role as a sadistic prison guard who would molest inmates has been convicted of sexually abusing a teenage girl more than 30 years ago.

Maggie Kirkpatrick, 74, was found guilty Thursday of two counts of indecent assault and one charge of gross indecency with a person under 16, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

The victim was a 14-year-old fan whom Kirkpatrick met in 1984 when the teen was being treated in a psychiatric hospital for substance abuse and a personality disorder. The victim testified Wednesday after keeping quiet for years, thinking no one would believe her "crazy" story.

Kirkpatrick, who had pleaded not guilty, was convicted of inviting the girl to her home one night in the summer of 1984 and sexually assaulting her in a bedroom before driving her back to the hospital, according to Australian media reports.

The actress told the court in Melbourne that her memories of her interactions with young fans during that time period was "sketchy," Sydney station 9 News reports. Still, she had proclaimed her innocence and told Melbourne's Herald Sun last month that she needed to go court to "have this ridiculous situation quashed."

The actress is unlikely to face prison time, according to Reuters, because prosecutors agreed she could receive a non-custodial sentence. She will be sentenced Friday.

A veteran TV actress who began her career in the early 1970s, Kirkpatrick is best known for playing prison officer Joan "The Freak" Ferguson on the popular Australian soap opera Prisoner, which ran from 1979 to 1986. The character often molested inmates under the guise of conducting body searches.

It's bad enough she foolishly invited an obsessed young fan into her home, but this girl was undergoing psychiatric treatment at the time and so was especially vulnerable.

She was found guilty. 'Prisoner' star Maggie Kirkpatrick avoids jail after being found guilty of sexually assaulting teen girl - 9news.com.au

Australian actress Maggie Kirkpatrick has avoided jail after being found guilty of sex offences involving a teenage girl.
The 74-year-old is required to complete 100 hours of community service over a 12 month period and will be placed on the sex offenders' registry for 8 years.
Kirkpatrick was found guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court of two counts of indecent assault and one charge of committing a gross act with a person under 16.

The incidents occurred at a Prahran house the Sydney-based actress had rented while in Melbourne filming the television show Prisoner.

Her portrayal of the character Joan "The Freak" Ferguson had made her a household name in Australia, winning her scores of fans, including the 14-year-old girl from Melbourne.

In 1984, the girl was a patient at a psychiatric hospital where she befriended a woman who also worked on the show.

The woman arranged a meeting with Kirkpatrick, and the actress collected the fan from the hospital and took her to her house for dinner.

After she'd cooked for the girl and they'd watched some television, they went to Kirkpatrick's bedroom where the actress sexually abused the girl.

When the allegations were aired last month, Kirkpatrick said she would fight them.

She told police in an interview they were malicious and untrue, and to hear what the girl was alleging made her ill.

But Magistrate Peter Mealy ruled the victim's testimony was truthful.

He noted there were inconsistencies in the timing of some events in the victim's testimony, but he was satisfied the passage of 30 years was the cause of the mistake.

"I am satisfied that she is a witness of truth," Mr Mealy said.

Lawyers for the NSW actress had argued the abuse was a single incident of limited duration that did not involve penetration, violence, or the threat of violence.

"Mrs Kirkpatrick is entitled to the benefit of 31 years without similar matters," Mr Hannebery told the court.

Her acting career is DONE!!! To have to live out one's golden years in shame and disgrace for doing something so utterly stupid and morally reprehensible...she should kick herself to death.

Yeah, the 'it only happened once' defence really rubs me the wrong way. Odds are you don't get caught the first time, so how many times has she gotten away with it.

Not sure about paedophiles but if you think about how many teachers are caught abusing their students, ephebophiles aren't exactly that rare.
