Default Eight is Enough actor Dick Van Patten has died

Dick Van Patten dead: Eight is Enough actor dies at 86 | EW.com

Dick Van Patten, the star of TV’s Eight is Enough, has died. He was 86.

The cause of death was complications due to diabetes, his rep confirmed to EW. Patten died at Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

“I am sorry to report this sad news,” his publicist Jeff Ballard said. “He was the kindest man you could ever meet in life. A loving family man. They don’t make them like him anymore.” Ballard added, “His family will not be doing any press at this time.”

While Van Patten first rose to fame as family dad Tom Bradford on the 1977-81 hit show Eight is Enough, he had been acting since he was a child, first appearing on Broadway at age 7. He went on to appear on Broadway 27 more times.

He also starred in several films, including the Mel Brooks spoof vehicles Space Balls and Robin Hood Men in Tights. The regularly working actor last appeared on the small screen in a guest role on Hot in Cleveland in 2011.

He is survived by his wife, actress Pat Van Patten, and the couple’s three sons: Nels, Jimmy, and Vincent.

For a while, the Van Pattens were on every network.

You can see the inspiration for Jim Bob's hairdo there, although the Duggars apparently felt that eight was nowhere near enough.

Recent pictures of him show him looking very ill. I also think he had issues with skin cancer.

His grain free dog food is awesome. Seemed like a nice guy and loving family man.

Omg The Love Boat was just on tv on Sunday. Dick was a guest star. My 13 year was entranced. We had to watch the 2 part episode!

Having seen Vince Van Patten on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, it's amazing how much he's like his dad.

    RIP Dick.

Sounds nasty, but it's not intended to be.
