Default Mo’nique: I was ‘blackballed’ from Hollywood following my 2010 Oscar win

Mo’nique claims that she now knows why the offers didn’t star flooding in after her big Oscar win in 2010. The former star of The Parkers, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the title character’s abusive, domineering mother in Precious, writes in an essay in the Feb. 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter that director-producer Lee Daniels clued her in just a few months ago.
Noting that an Oscar win “normally does” lead to “more respect, choices, money” in the business, Mo’Nique writes, “But I got a phone call from Lee Daniels…And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.’ I said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game.’”

After steamrolling the competition throughout the 2009-10 awards season, Mo’Nique famously didn’t campaign for her Oscar, going on to say in her acceptance speech that she was grateful to the Academy “for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics.”

“I said, ‘Well, what game is that?’” her THR piece continues. “He gave me no response.”
People who would say that she’s “difficult,” “tactless” or “tacky” would “probably be right,” the actress writes. “That’s why I have my beautiful husband because he’s so full of tact. I’m just a girl from Baltimore. But being from that place, you learn not to let anybody take advantage of you.”
Mo’Nique also writes that she was offered the role of Forest Whitaker’s wife in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, a part that ultimately went to Oprah Winfrey; a role in the Daniels-produced Fox hit Empire; and the role of Richard Pryor’s grandmother [also now set to be played by Oprah] in the upcoming biopic Daniels is working on—but, she adds, “they all just went away.”

In response to Mo’Nique, Daniels said ina statement to THR: “Mo’Nique is a creative force to be reckoned with. Her demands through Precious were not always in line with the campaign. This soured her relationship with the Hollywood community. I consider her a friend. I have and will always think of her for parts that we can collaborate on, however the consensus among the creative teams and powers thus far were to go another way with these roles.”

Lee Daniels released a statement that she is misreporting what he said to her. There are a lot of stories, back as far as 2009, about how horrible it was to deal with her. She shot herself in the foot.

from 2009: Even Terrance Howard tried to help her understand why she needed to do promotion. (Then he suggested baby wipes)

This is really shallow comment that has nothing to do with the main article.. but my goodness Mo'nique has such a cute, pretty face.

How will whining about it and calling in Lee Daniels help that case?

Yes, the fact that she's a woman in Hollywood, and a black overweight woman at that, means that she's not afforded the same privilege as the many male Hollywood actors who can be raging, difficult assholes as long as they're talented (I'm looking at you, Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Christian Bale, Ed Norton, etc). If you're a woman woman and difficult, they just replace you with someone else. Sean Young and Katherine Heigl learned this the hard way. Young refused to play the game and disappeared. Heigl stopped starring in movies and got a lifetime ban to Shondaland, and had to star in zzzquyl commercials to pay the bills. To get a semblance of her career back, she had to swallow her pride, admit she was a bitch in interviews, and now she's landed a role in a mediocre tv show that probably won't be renewed. I doubt her career will ever be as hot as it once was. She's basically a cautionary tale for "difficult" women in Hollywood.
Mo'nique is known to be a raging bitch and she's not apologising for it. She has to choose - is she going to be Sean Young or is she going to go the Heigl route and try to get her career back? At the same time, it's great that she's calling Hollywood out on its bullshit, unfortunately her bad reputation doesn't exactly make her a sympathetic figure so I doubt she'll get very far.

You can be principled without being an asshole. I'd applaud her if she resisted political bullshit she found demeaning but was otherwise hard working and talented. But if she's a dick, you reap what you sow.

Also, having to do promotion for the film or Oscars is part the job. Refusing to do it is just being difficult.

I would think promotion is the hardest part of being an actor. Most other actors seem to enjoy the acting part.

There was a BI at agc.com that said a recent Oscar winner had become unemployable because of her "I just won an Oscar" attitude. Forget what gossip blog the BI originated from, but the overwhelming majority of guesses? Moapostrophenique.

    Hi *DIVA,

i didn't even even notice Mo'nique's size... But did notice her lovely face and i commented on it.

It would be a great shame if society becomes so Politically Correct that we can't say if we think a person is pretty.

Mo'nique is a VERY pretty lady, in my humble opinion.. (also i have weight issues so i'm not going to make fun of anyone's size).

Yes, sexism is alive and well in Hollywood, but in this case she wasn't calling Hollywood on their bullshit, she was not fulfilling her obligation to promote the film. She didn't show up. Some mega stars (male and female) can get away with that, but she is far from a mega star.

Not even talking about her personality, she is old and heavy, there aren't that many roles in Hollywood for that "type" unless you are Oprah and produce them yourself.

Mo'nique may be heavy by Hollywood standards, but she went through a rigorous weight loss program to lose weight. I think she looks great. It's kind of ironic that her comeback is going to start with a movie with Isaiah Washington.
