    RICHARD KIEL

'JAWS' FROM JAMES BOND DIES AT 74

Richard Kiel, who became famous for portraying the James Bond villain, Jaws ... died Wednesday afternoon at the age of 74 ... TMZ has learned.

Kiel starred in dozens of movies over the span of 50 years ... though his Jaws character became his most iconic role after debuting in 1977's "The Spy Who Loved Me" alongside Roger Moore. He returned in "Moonraker" two years later.

The 7-foot-2 Kiel also co-starred with Adam Sandler in the golf classic "Happy Gilmore."

Kiel had broken his leg last week and was in a hospital in Fresno, CA. A family member tells us he passed away this afternoon in the hospital -- and it's unclear if his death was connected to the leg injury.

That is sad. I remember him from an episode of The Twilight Zone, "Too Serve Man". I still get chills when I watch it.
    RIP, sir.

I remember watching him as the metal-toothed Jaws in "The Spy Who Loved Me" and he gave me nightmares when he smiled. I read a lot of nice things about him regarding how kindhearted and gentle he was. How sad. RIP, Mr. Kiel.

Richard Kiel had acromegaly. He lived a long life for someone with that condition.

I did some work for him a few years back and he was just a sweetie. I told him my brother was stationed overseas and Richard asked me his name. Next thing I knew, he had mailed me some autographed photos to send to my brother. It struck me as such a nice gesture. RIP.

From what I've seen of him in interviews he truly was a gentle giant. I believe I read somewhere once that his (then) wife was about 5 foot tall!!!! R.I.P. Mr. Kiel. They said he would have turned 75 on Saturday.

Every time I see this guy, all i can think of is him having that nail sticking out of his head, in Happy Gilmore.

This was actually my favorite Richard Kiel scene - "he broke my f*ckin' nose!" from "The Longest Yard". The other actor in the scene is Robert Tessier, who played a lot of bad guys in film - and was Algonquin Indian in descent (and looks it):
