Default Bob Dylan refused to marry Joan Baez because he couldn't control her

Bob Dylan refused to marry Joan Baez because he couldn't control her and shunned his lesbian daughter, reveals blockbuster book by best pal

After five decades, legendary folk/rock icon Bob Dylan remains as secretive and controlling in his relationships with women as he was when he first showed up on New York's Greenwich Village folk scene in the early Sixties.

He was in love with folksinger, Joan Baez but wouldn't marry her because he couldn't control her and didn't want to compete with her.

Those close to him speculate he had as many as five wives, three more than he disclosed.

He kept his six-year marriage to gospel-rock singer Carolyn Dennis, a secret for fifteen years, along with the gay daughter of that marriage, Desiree Dennis-Dylan.

Dylan was so secretive he sometimes kept his closest confidants out of the loop. But Victor Maymudes, Dylan's sidekick for decades who passed away in 2001, recorded his memories and observations of the legend on tape and they are now revealed in Another Side of Dylan: A Personal History on the Road and Off The Tracks, published by St. Martin's Press.

Dylan, now 73, was hanging with folksinger Joan Baez in Bearsville, New York, a hamlet in the upstate town of Woodstock in the summer of 1964. He was working on what would be his fourth album, Another Side of Dylan, which prophetically featured the song, It Ain't Me Babe.

As much as he loved Joan, and as close as the couple were, he wouldn't marry Baez but chose to walk down the aisle the following year, in 1965, with former model and Playboy bunny, Sara Lownds.
'Why not Joan Baez', Maymudes asked Dylan.

'Because Sara will be home when I want her to be home, she'll be there when I want her to be there, she'll do it when I want her to do it. Joan won't be there when I want her. She won't do it when I want to do it', Dylan told him.

Hit the road Jack: Back up singer for Ray Charles and Dylan, Carolyn Dennis (left) married Dylan in 1986. The marriage took place six months after their secret daughter (right) Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan was born. But the existence of the baby girl wouldn't be revealed until fifteen years later

Don't think twice: Bob Dylan's gay 'secret' 28-year-old daughter Desiree Dennis-Dylan was set to marry her girlfriend, Kayla Sampson. Dylan was invited to the wedding

'Bob didn't want to compete with her', Maymudes says. 'If Bob was a king, Joan was a queen, and Bob didn't want a queen. He wanted something simpler'.

The shy and quiet Sara Lownds had been hanging around Bearsville and the music scene at the time. When Dylan was writing, Sara sought out Victor and they'd go off and smoke dope together.

Joan, now 73, was immediately successful after starting her singing and activist career in 1960, and was constantly in demand and on the road performing some of Dylan's songs, helping to make him famous as well as lots of money.

Sara and Bob had moved out of Woodstock and had homes in New York's Greenwich Village and a summer home on Long Island.

Dylan confessed to Maymudes that his fame had become frustrating, 'a kind of prison that closed in around him and made him fear for his own safety and that of his family. He naturally resented all of that'.

He moved his family out to Los Angeles and bought land on the coast in Malibu. He bought a two hundred year-old hacienda up in the Santa Barbara hills as a private retreat for Sara. But the marriage was troubled.

'Sara was isolated in general, for the spotlight was always on Bob. She wanted a personal identity beyond that of wife and mother'.

Hard driving: He fell in love with Suze Rotolo, an artist, who was photographed with him on the cover of his album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. But his controlling instincts showed up back then in verbal arguments

Married with children: Dylan and his wife Sara Lownds leaving London after performing at the Isle of Wight festival. Dylan's wife was pregnant at the time. Eventually the couple had four children together, including son Jacob, a musician

Sara couldn't talk to anyone in LA 'because Bob has a strange sort of mafia-like control of everyone around him. In the end, I think it's self-defeating. But it's his thing', wrote Victor.

The turbulent marriage was over in June 1977 after having four children together including musician Jakob Dylan. There were many separations due to his alleged affairs with other women as well as long-time lover, Joan Baez who remained part of his life even though he didn't marry her.

The divorce was acrimonious but netted Sara $36 million plus half of the song royalties written while they were married. One condition was never to speak about her life with Dylan.

'I think she ended up with a bundle but I can only imagine the price she paid, ' said the author.

In June 1986, Dylan married Carolyn Dennis, his longtime backup singer who had also been a member of Ray Charles's Raelettes.

The marriage took place six months after their 'secret daughter,' Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan was born. Robert Dylan was named as the father on the birth certificate.

But the existence of the baby girl wouldn't be revealed until 2001, fifteen years later, when British author, Howard Soundes wrote the explosive news in his 2001 biography of Dylan, Down The Highway.

Denise and Bob mutually decided to keep the baby a secret and out of the public eye for the child's benefit. They also decided their daughter could choose for herself if she wanted to take her father's last name. She did so in 1999.

Desiree announced she was going to marry her partner Kayla Sampson in September 2013 when California lifted the ban on same sex marriage.

Dylan and this wife, Carolyn Dennis, were never photographed together in public. She resided in Tarzana, California, a suburb of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, when Dylan let his backup singers go. Dylan visited rarely and Dennis filed for divorce four years after the marriage, which became final in October 1992.

Victor Maymudes, a singer himself, first met Dylan when the singer arrived in New York's Greenwich Village in 1961 and began playing at the coffeehouses on MacDougal street to earn enough money for food.

It was an era that ushered in beatniks, music, peace and love, marijuana and booze – all of which both men actively participated in.

The pair became friends instantly and began what became a lifetime event of meandering around and talking - always high on grass or hash.

They smoked in the coffeehouses – so much so that Bill Cosby, who was also hanging around the scene but a preppy, came over to the pair and suggested that they shouldn't smoke so much pot.

'You'll waste your lives', he told them. 'You'll grown hair on your hands and lose your sex drive. You'll grow breasts'!

'We had a good laugh about it and just kept on smoking,' said the author.

'We continued to sit and get high – laughing, talking about the world. He was twenty and I was twenty-five… I'd traveled and he hadn't really yet'.

Dylan had no money at the time and would order coffee in a bar and wait for someone to buy him a meal.

He fell in love with Suze Rotolo, an artist, who was photographed with him on the cover of his album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, but his controlling instincts showed up back then in verbal arguments.

Calling Suze from a phone booth, a huge fight ensued, reveals Maymudes

'I'm going on a drive and you need to come with me. You need to come. When I go, you need to go'.

Victor saw that as the beginning of the end of that relationship.

When they met, Dylan confessed to Victor that he was running away from home in Minnesota, a practice that began when he was eleven.

He had been in juvenile hall, thought about escaping with the carnival when it came to town. Life back in Hibbing, Minnesota was rough when his father left the family and he went to live with his grandmother in Minneapolis.

Dylan expressed his bitter loneliness in songs he was constantly writing down in a spiral notebook and then rewriting on a typewriter. Wherever they traveled, Dylan holed himself up in a hotel room while Victor went out and engaged himself in sports or exploring the locale.

Other heavy hitters in Greenwich Village at the time included: writers and poets Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, Truman Capote; painters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning; actors Steve McQueen, Barbra Streisand and Woody Allen. Everyone was either performing or listening to the new music of the 1960s.

The author describes the night Dylan met the Beatles for the first time, on August 28th, 1964. 'Bob tried to roll a joint and it fell to pieces in his hands,' Maymudes revealed, "scattering pot over a bowl of fruit sitting on the table.'

So Victor decided to roll the joints himself. That really got the party started but shortly thereafter a drunk Dylan passed out on the floor.

'The following morning, Paul came up to me and hugged me for 10 minutes,' wrote Maymudes, 'and said, "It was so great, and it's all your fault because I love this pot!'"

Maymudes says Dylan 'could lose control more than other people and go off like that. He was on the edge, I think, because he had, and still has a narrow social view for his personal relationships.

'But…he has a view of poetry that reaches further and sees more than anyone else, which he's able to write down. So the dynamics of his personality balance out, if you're willing to accept his shortcomings and be in awe of his brilliance.

'He's not perfect... he can be an a**hole just like the rest of us,'Victor wrotes about Dylan.

But as close as the two men were for forty years, Dylan remained an enigma to Maymudes, who believed Dylan initially didn't have many women. He know Dylan didn't like aggressive women, groupies who wanted just to be with the rising star and fondle him and kiss him.

'He's only attracted to the passive and mellow women who don't ask too much of him.'

He describes 'a funny situation with this very forward girl who wanted to get in Bob's pants; he just didn't want anything to do with it. Bob just wasn't a sexual guy like I was', writing about a groupie who was crawling all over Dylan in the back seat of a car after a gig.

But Dylan carried on affairs during his marriages and it has been reported that the singer was married five times.

After Sara Lowndes, a secret marriage to backup singer, Clydie King was speculated by Susan Ross, a legal assistant who dated Dylan at one time and said he was a lousy lover.

Ruth Tyrangiel, was named a common law wife in the early nineties after she and Dylan had been together from 1974-1991. He was forced to pay her alimony.

Dylan married backup singer, Carolyn Dennis in June 1986 and Susan Ross suggests he was possibly married to another backup singer as well, Carol Woods.

As close as Victor was to the freewheelin' Bob Dylan, not even he was privy to all the details of the secretive and controlling music legend.

A smoker and a joker: Victor Maymudes was Bob Dylan's sidekick for 40 years. Although he passed away, his son has put his father's recollections and anecdotes together in a new book.

Not really shocked about any of this information. He's always seemed like a quiet asshole. Still like loads of his songs.

I just Googled for some old and new pics of Joan Baez, and I have to say I would have figured out a mutually agreeable schedule!

How can you have a common law wife if you are already married? Wouldn't that be considered polygamy? The common law wife claimed they were together from 1974-1991, yet he was already married, divorcing Sara in 1977 and then was married to Carolyn from 1986-1992? I call gold digger on that bullshit.

I can't stand him or his music. I remember years ago I took my Dad to see Santana, and Dylan was headlining. We were out in Devore, CA where that place was filled to the brim. Santana came out first and brought the house down. As soon as Dylan came out on stage everyone left. I'll never forget that.

I agree. The man sings like he's got a mouth full of shit. He had one song that I could tolerate. Plus, he's ugly and an asshole, I can't believe any woman would want to marry the jackass!

Wow. Just did and went the same. She is definitely one of those woman who gets even more beautiful as she ages. A gorgeous woman now, with a ton of character on her face.

Not being ordered around by a neurotic dude probably reduced her aging rate by like 50%.

Loved his music back in the day but couldn't stand to look at him. Was searching for photos of him and ran across this odd one.

Never got the hype. He can't sing. And I don't get his lyrics to his songs either. And I prefer The Isley Brothers' version of Lay Lady Lay, although it's a stupid song.

Joan still looks good, but it was her sister Mimi Farina that was the beauty. She died a few years ago, too young.

All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.

She was cute, too (picture below). I think that Dylan wrote a lot of good songs and even SANG a couple - "Everybody Must Get Stoned" "Subterranean Homesick Blues". And we wouldn't have Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" if Dylan hadn't written it.
