Default Miley Cyrus' Homeless VMAs Date Has Record, Warrant Out for Arrest

The once-homeless man who was Miley Cyrus' date at the MTV VMAs on Sunday has a police record and an open warrant out for his arrest.

Jesse Helt, 22, gave a speech and accepted the award for Best Video on behalf of Cyrus on Sunday night at the MTV VMAs.

Helt spoke about youth homelessness in America and had Cyrus, 21, in tears.

However, Helt has a warrant out for his arrest in his native Oregon.

Court records obtained by ABC News showed he was arrested for "criminal mischief" and "attempted burglary" in 2010. The burglary charge was changed to "criminal trespass" later that year. The records showed that Helt admitted he tried to enter an apartment by breaking a window amid a "marijuana" dispute.

He pleaded guilty/no contest to the charges and received probation. An arrest warrant was issued in 2011 when Helt violated probation by failing to report to scheduled probation meetings and failing to complete urine tests, among other charges.

Jon Troike, a judicial services specialist, told ABC News that Helt would be arrested if the police found him, and they might find him right in Oregon.

Helt's mother, Linda Helt, said yesterday that he would be flying home later that night.

Helt grew up in Salem, Oregon, also according to his mother.

Tuesday afternoon, Cryus tweeted, saying "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included. I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."

She continued, "Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?"

Cyrus and Helt connected through My Friend’s Place -- a Los Angeles center for homeless youth, helping them to get food and shelter.

Miley Cyrus' Homeless VMAs Date Has Record, Warrant Out for Arrest - ABC News

Most people consider homeless to mean poor, destitute, no place to turn to. So when Miley Cyrus brought a “homeless” date to the VMAs, it was just assumed that she picked this poor guy up off the streets where poverty had left him. Turns out he’s a struggling model whose mom says he can come home anytime he wants. Whoops. The Daily Mail reports:

Speaking from her home in Salem, Mrs Helt, mother to Jesse’s three brothers and sister, added Jesse chose to ‘go it alone’ and chase his dreams.
She said: ‘He wanted to be in Los Angeles and he had opportunities and he took them, but you know, he’s had his ups and downs like anybody else.
‘It was his choice, he was always welcome, he could always come back any time. If he needed help, I’d help him, we help one another,’ she added.

And if you’re about to say this is nitpicking, go ahead and ask a real homeless person what they’d do just to sleep in a clean bed let alone after a home-cooked meal because I’m pretty sure they’d apologize to their mom for doing drugs and breaking into houses in a heartbeat. In fact, they’d probably say, “Wait, that’s it?!” before stabbing you with a tin can for actually thinking they’d be stupid enough to pass that up.

    Goddammit.

Bullshit. There are a lot of homeless kids who "could" go back to their families if they're willing to put up with abuse, drug addiction etc. Just because a family claims a person can go home anytime they want, doesn't make it the best choice for them. I don't know anything about this particular dude and he could just be a spoilt party kid, but a clean bed in a shitty home isn't preferable to sleeping on the streets for a lot of people.

Not to mention the fact that when the press comes a-knockin', people are likely to paint themselves in a better light.

This article's definition of homelessness is ridiculous. Faithanne said it best.

Also even if they have a good home and a good family to go back to personal shame for how far they have fallen in society or the things they have done during that time can be a big mental and emotional barrier to overcome.

This is total truth right here. Sometimes I wish I had had enough cojones to run away from my house.

I'm going to be all judgy because I really despise Miley. She only picked him because he cleaned up nice. While I have no doubt he has had a tough life and I agree with what you all said about returning home and shame, etc. he was picked because he is not a bad looking guy. If you're going to put a face on homelessness, let's make it a cute one.

I think that unfortunately, our country isn't ready to have a national conversation about homelessness. We still look away, drive by and pass judgement. We will give millions of dollars to charities to help people in other countries, dump buckets of ice water on each other to support the latest feel-good movement, but we are really crappy at looking at our own backyard and helping those in our own country that need our help the most.

He may have had a tough life, but if he wasn't a good looking model, I wonder if she would've picked him to accept her award?

Now I'm nostalgic for the King of Facepalm. Not only did he not read other people's posts, he didn't even read his OWN posts and would start a thread copypasting an article about something and then ask everyone pointless questions that were already answered in the article HE posted.

Oh, I think we've all been guilty of not reading the posts carefully and saying what someone else already said. I know I have, and I'm formally asking for forgiveness, just as I now forgive those who repeated my thoughts (even though at the time in my mind I probably said, "I already said that dumbass!!") Great minds think alike and all lol
