Default Legendary Actor James Garner Dead at 86

Legendary actor James Garner -- star of "The Rockford Files" and "The Notebook" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us an ambulance was dispatched to the actor's home in Los Angeles around 8PM Saturday evening ... and he was dead when they arrived on scene.

We do not know his cause of death at this time.

Garner was one of the first actors to amass success in both television and film ... and he starred in a long list of classic films -- as well as a co-starring role in the '94 big screen version of "Maverick" starring Mel Gibson. Garner was the original Bret Maverick from 1957-1960 ... as well as the same character in a short lived '80s remake.

Garner, who was 86 years old, also played the older version of Ryan Gosling's character in "The Notebook."

AAaaawww, well, 86 isn't bad for a guy who's had several major health issues over the past two decades or so. R.I.P.

He was a tough, interesting guy. RIP. By the way, his show had one of my favorite all-time theme songs (by the great Mike Post). Totally takes me back to my childhood.....

On Friday I was flipping channels and 8 Simple Rules came on. I watched him playing the grandfather, and thought of all his great roles over the years. I thought about adding him to the death list and couldn't bring myself to type his name. Yesterday The Notebook came on and I smiled seeing his face on my screen again. His death makes me sad but it is nice that he died at home, with family. RIP Maverick.

I am pretty sure I had him in the death pool, but I damn sure didn't want it to happen. I was crazy about Jim Garner. He just seemed like a regular guy. RIP, sir. You will certainly be missed.

Very underrated actor. And supposedly one of the nicer guys in show business. RIP.

Very sad. I was a little kid in the 70's and I remember he was everywhere. The Rockford Files and those Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley.

He was amazing. There isn't very much that he was in that I didn't love, solely because of him. Anyone remember the movie Murphy's Romance with he and Sally Field? I was just so cute.

Will miss you, Mr. Garner. God Speed.

Loved this guy. I loved the Rockford Files when I was a kid. I used to watch it with my dad. He always seemed like a really nice guy. RIP.
