Default Shailene Woodley: I'm Not a Feminist "Because I Love Men”

What would Tris Prior say? Divergent's Shailene Woodley became the latest famous woman to distance herself from the F word, feminism, in a Time article on May 5. The Fault in Our Stars actress, 22, says she doesn't consider herself to be a feminist, "because I love men."

"I think the idea of ‘raise women to power, take the men away from the power’ is never going to work out because you need balance," she explained to Time. "With myself, I’m very in touch with my masculine side. And I’m 50 percent feminine and 50 percent masculine, same as I think a lot of us are. Also I think that if men went down and women rose to power, that wouldn’t work either. We have to have a fine balance."

Over the past few years, Woodley has made a name for herself in film after years of appearing on ABC Family's drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 2011's The Descendants, and soon after signed on to star as the headstrong Tris Prior in the YA Divergent series' film adaptations.

Just because she doesn't consider herself a feminist, however, doesn't mean she can't appreciate women. In fact, she thinks the bigger problem exists between women.

"My biggest thing is really sisterhood more than feminism," she continued. "I don’t know how we as women expect men to respect us because we don’t even seem to respect each other. There’s so much jealousy, so much comparison and envy. And 'This girl did this to me and that girl did that to me.' And it’s just so silly and heartbreaking in a way."

I said dumb things like this when I was close to her age. Hopefully she will grow and read.

Didn't Katy Perry say something similar then come back and admit she misunderstood what feminism is? STFU Shailene.

She's not that great of an actress. I see a short career for her. Right now she's riding the success of her movie with George where she played herself, an annoying teen. Now she spends her time trying to convince us that she's down to earth. No.

I can see it. If she's had people in her life representing feminism as man hating, I can understand how this happened. This statement is absolutely drenched in ignorance. I'm going to give her a few years before I condemn her for it.

Didn't she read or learn about feminism at school?

I remember reading Noami Wolf and Margaret Atwood in High School. Some of these celebrities should just remain quiet.

We never studied feminism in school beyond women's suffrage, but that was 20 years ago so things may have changed.

Like it or not, this part has some validity.

Unfortunately feminism is sometimes viewed as being "man hating" and bitchy. Obviously not the case.. but somehow the stereotype exists.

She's just a dumbass and a horrible actress on top of that. I need her to go away now before I want to beat her even more.
I am going to come and burn the fucking house down... but you will blow me first."
