Most recently he recurred on Bones and as Mark Harmon’s father, Papa Gibbs, on NCIS. He appeared on TV series including Bonanza and N.Y.P.D. and later as slave ship mate Slater in the landmark miniseries Roots, a key supporting role that earned Waite his first Emmy nom. He also worked on the big screen, including roles in films ranging from Cool Hand Luke and Five Easy Pieces to The Bodyguard and Cliffhanger. The White Plains, NY, native also starred in the mid-’80s CBS drama The Mississippi and did arcs on Steven Bochco’s Murder One and HBO’s Carnivale. I think it was on D listed that I read "famous people die in 3's, we'd better start a prayer circle around Betty White"; is it wrong that because Ralph Waite has passed, I'm glad Betty is safe?

I said it in the Sid thread....who will be next? Shirley, Sid and now Ralph. They always go in 3's.

I hated having to watch this show as a kid, but I do have fond memories watching the show with my parents. Rip Pa!

    this sucks.

I have fond memories of watching him on The Waltons with my mom and grandmother.

He was terrific in Carnivale too.
