Default Legendary actor Peter O'Toole dies at 81

    Peter O'Toole
    Dead at 81

    BY TMZ STAFF

    Exclusive Details

Hollywood legend Peter O'Toole died peacefully in his sleep last night ... TMZ has learned.

A rep for O'Toole tells us the actor passed away at a hospital in London surrounded by friends and family ... and says Peter had been ill for some time.

Peter had been in countless films -- including "Lawrence of Arabia", "Goodbye, Mr Chips" and "Venus" -- and holds the record for most Oscar nominations without ever winning.

He was given an honorary Academy Award in 2010 to make up for it.

Peter retired from acting last year saying he no longer had the heart for it.

Peter's daughter Kate released a statement saying, "His family are very appreciative and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of real love and affection being expressed towards him, and to us, during this unhappy time."

Kate adds, "Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts. In due course there will be a memorial filled with song and good cheer, as he would have wished."

    He was 81.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

He was my mad crush from his Lawrence days. His drinking days with Burton & Harris were legendary, so I guess we're glad to have had him around as long as we did.

This really hurts, big time. Go in peace, "awrence", Henry II, Alan Swan, Eli Cross (bunch of other roles I can't think of because I'm so upset).

He had a heck of a life and career. Gotta hope that this one makes it to the Oscars In Memoriam tribute!

Oh God, how tragic! I loved him. That shot of him when he appears in Lawrence of Arabia is fantastic, his bright blue eyes are just stunning. He's been looking frail for a while now and I'm surprised he lasted this long with his rampant drinking, but he certainly was a beauty when he was younger and a great actor to boot. RIP.

He was gorgeous as a young man but indeed, he'd been looking like death warmed over for some time now. R.I.P. Mr. O'Toole.

Feels like a certain era is over as I watch my parents' peers and icons die. He certainly had a good run in this life.
