Default Carrie Underwood Slams Sound of Music Live! Critics: Mean People Need Jesus

Jesus take the wheel! Carrie Underwood isn't letting Sound of Music Live! critics get her down. The country singer has slammed "mean people" via Twitter on the very same day the film's original star, Kym Karath, bashed Underwood for her acting chops. Karath played Greti von Trapp in the 1965 musical film The Sound of Music. Watch video of her performances here.

"Plain and simple: Mean people need Jesus," 30-year-old Underwood wrote via Twitter on Friday, Dec. 6. "They will be in my prayers tonight...1 Peter 2:1-25." The Bible scripture Underwood cites states to "rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind."

Underwood responded to "mean people" just hours after the internet exploded with some harsh words about the show. Karath was one of many to comment about the live event, and slammed the singer for landing the role of Julie Andrews' Maria von Trapp. At the time, Karath was watching the three-hour program with former costars Charmian Carr (Liesl von Trapp) and Angela Cartwright (Brigitta von Trapp.)

"Mystified & disappointed so far by SOM special," Karath tweeted during the live performance on Thursday. "So far only happy with Stephen Moyer." (True Blood star Moyer played Christopher Plummer's Captain von Trapp.) "Must admit some scenes are actually painful to watch."

She added: "Love Carrie Underwood but this role is just not right for her. She is lovely her voice is beautiful but acting is wrong."

Despite snarky tweets from viewers, Underwood shared her excitement for how well the production went shortly after the curtain closed. "Glory to God tonight...I couldn't be more proud," she tweeted. "What a tough thing to pull off and we did it! I am so blessed!!!" Sound of Music Live! ultimately pulled in 18.47 million viewers for NBC.

I can't comment as I didn't watch it. Have heard it wasn't so good though. Maybe Carrie should stick to singing? Not everyone is multi-talented.

I was looking around the Interwebz to find a Bible verse about snitty little bitches, but I couldn't find one I liked well enough to post. I did, however, find this:

It doesn't have a whole lot to do with anything, but it made me laugh, so enjoy!

NBC never would've put on the live production without Carrie Underwood. But she was seriously miscast as Maria. Has the voice but can't act. The actual Broadway actors were far, far better than Underwood.

All her Jesus crap is really really annoying. Maybe she just shouldn't be shit, that would stop the haters.

You know it must be bad when Bill Compton is the standout performer.

I'm not mean, I have Jesus, and I still think every other actor on that set, including the children, ran circles around Carrie Underwood both with singing and acting. She can hit the right notes, but she had to push so hard to do so -- particularly during the first round of "My Favorite Things" -- it was uncomfortable to watch.

This is a darling performance and their voices are fabulous. I think that was very wrong for Kym Karath to do any bashing, what a bitch.

Carrie Underwood was no Julie Andrews, but I think it's hilarious that Kym Karath and Charmian Carr are dissing this production, because I thought NBC's Liesl and Gretl blew Kym and Charmian out of the water.

I'm with Christopher Plummer and hate the Sound of Music. Doubt she could make that saccharine crap fest any worse.

Did not watch. Because I thought it was a snorefest when I was a kid, but she was on How I met Your Mother and was pretty good imo. I think she is so gorgeous, in a pageanty way.

I remember being in 7th grade and being forced to watch this at a friends house. The whole family was into it and I wanted to shoot myself. I absolutely hated it.

I feel for Carrie, but she put herself out there in a major way, and when you do that in this day and age with our social media, you have to be prepared for the backlash. She has a lovely voice, but she is not an actress. She couldn't carry something like this off. Bravo for her for trying, but now pull up your big girl panties, take your lumps, stop telling anyone that criticizes you to find Jesus and go find a project that better suits your talents.
