The figure is derived from the World Bank’s definition of extreme poverty. About 1.4 billion of the world’s 7 billion people live on less than $1.50 a day, according to the charity’s website.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker made political hay out of his week on a similar program last fall in a not-so-subtle dig at Chris Christie, the state’s obese governor. Booker lived on $4 a day, the equivalent of an individual food-stamp allocation.
The Live Below the Line campaign runs from Monday, April 29, through Friday, May 3.
