Doctors have told the actress, 73, she may have only three months left.

Known and loved for her frank and funny role as upstairs neighbor Rhoda Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Valerie Harper has revealed she is facing terminal brain cancer.

The actress, 73, tells People mag (on newsstands Friday) that she got the diagnosis on Jan. 15.
Tests revealed she has leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare condition that occurs when cancer cells spread into the fluid-filled membrane surrounding the brain. Harper tells the mag she is opting for chemo, but, according to People, her doctors say she may only have three months left to live.
"I don't think of dying," says Harper, who has been married to Tony Cacciotti since 1987. "I think of being here now."
In 2009, Harper, who described herself as "a lifelong non-smoker," was diagnosed with lung cancer, which she beat. But she tells People now, "I'm well past my expiration date already."
Fans immediately jumped on Twitter to send well-wishes her way. Among them:
Hoda Kotb: "I adore you xoxo we all do and are praying for you"
Andy Cohen: "Praying for Valerie Harper. Puts everything in perspective quickly."
Sally Jessy Raphael: "Tragic news about Valerie Harper. She has terminal brain cancer & just 3 months. Sending prayers, love & gratitude for her wonderful work."

I was just thinking how great she looked for 73 a few months ago. I'm really saddened by this, why can't we put more money into cancer research rather than wars or other foolish endeavors?

A few months ago, I had to euthanize a cat that had bone cancer. The woman (an elderly lady) told me about how when her husband was dying of cancer, that cat never left his side, stayed on the pillow right next to his head until his last breath. Now her cat had cancer and she was just devastated that she had to put him down but he was in pain and thought it was the kindest thing to do. I spoke to her recently because she adopted a new cat, she said she liked thinking that her cat was sitting next to her husband in heaven now. Fucking cancer, man or beast, it needs to be eradicated!

Aaawww, not Valerie! She's a tough cookie. I hope she will be able to still have great times with her loved ones before she'll go.

Mary Tyler Moore seemed so much more fragile. Valerie looked so healthy. You just never know.

This is fucking sad. It's too soon after Bonnie Franklin ffs.
On a lighter note, her autobiography I, Rhoda should pick up sales. Betty White and Ed Asner like it.

This is pretty much the worst thing. I'm so sorry and sad for her.

I always thought Rhoda was hot. The accent did kind of hurt my ears, I have to admit....

And don't forget - Rhoda's little sister is Marge Simpson.
