Default Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge) views ugly first official portrait

The Duchess of Cambridge given private viewing of her first official portrait

The first official portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge provoked a dismayed reaction when it was unveiled this morning.

Critics slammed the 'rotten' picture by Paul Emsley after it was unveiled at London's National Portrait Gallery, saying it looked 'nothing like Kate in real life'.

Sunday Times art critic Waldemar Januszczak called the portrait 'pretty ordinary... He made her look older than she is and her eyes don't sparkle in the way that they do and there's something rather dour about the face.'

Emsley- who is famous for dividing opinion with his extraordinarily realistic, almost ‘photographic’ style - was commissioned by the gallery after Kate chose him from a shortlist.

Omg that's so bad! She looks old and worn out when in real life she's all sparkly and beautiful. And surely if you wanted a photo you'd take a photo and not get someone to paint you a picture that looks like a photo, from a photo.

That portrait does her no justice.

That painting makes her look 20 years older and haggard!

Maybe they can give it to that woman who "fixed" the picture of Jesus. LOL!

Meh. She looks blah, pretty much as she does in real life. Personally, I think he nailed it.

She painted in an expression that makes her look like she's mid-speaking and about to say something. Bad choice of facial expression, especially around the mouth.

It looks like her in real life. Except, the painter didin't get the EYELINER right. I mean, the EYELINER makes her face.

The nose jumps out as the weakest link here. A bit more shading to get rid of the bulbous tip and too-wide bridge and it wouldn't look so bad (maybe make the cheeks a little rosier so she doesn't look like the living dead) and completely agree with Laurent about the bad choice of expression. As it is, she looks like she has balls of cotton wool in her mouth, which is due to the shading around that bit of the jaw. Saying that, it's a good portrait but for a few tweaks makes the difference between a 'Awww, lovely' and 'Jesus effing H. Christ, what is it!' reaction.

I'm laughing my ass off. That is so bad and I'm sure poor Kate had to pretend she liked it publicly.
