A plane carrying Vittorio Missoni, who heads the Missoni fashion house started by his parents, has disappeared off the coast of Venezuela.

Mr Missoni, 58, and his wife, Maurizia Castiglioni, were traveling with another couple and two crew members from the resort islands of Los Roques to Caracas, a distance of approximately 100 miles, on Friday. The plane took off at 11:00am and was reported missing at 11:30am.

Vittorio Missoni, 58, is missing after his plane disappeared off the coast of Venezuela

The close-knit Italian family are distraught at the frightening news as the Venezuelan Coast Guard continue to search the area on Saturday.

Mr Missoni and his wife spent Christmas and New Year's with four friends at the resort area, a popular location for scuba diving and coral reefs, Venezuela's Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said.

The two friends who were with Mr Missoni and his wife on the plane are believed to be entrepreneur Guido Foresti and Elda Scalvenzi from Brescia, according to reports from the Italian press.
The plane that went missing is a twin-engine Britten Norman BN2 Islander, a British light utility aircraft.

The two other friends in their holiday party, said to be Elda Scalvenzi's brother Joseph and his wife, Rosa Apostles, had remained on the Gran Roque island in the Caribbean sea, on Friday and were not on the plane.

Venezuelan officials conducted air and sea searches on Friday but halted the effort during the night. They are set to resume on Saturday.

Mr Missoni is the eldest son of Ottavio and Rosita Missioni, who founded the fashion label in 1953.

The 58-year-old is the marketing director at the company and in charge of the American and French affiliates of the Italian luxury brand.

'The Missoni family has been informed by the Venezuelan consulate that Vittorio Missoni and his wife are missing, but we don't know any more,' a spokesman for Missioni, Maddalena Aspes, said in a statement.

'The authorities will resume their search for the plane in the morning.'
Vittorio's younger brother, Luca, was en route to Venezuela to coordinate with officials, according to the Milan daily newspaper, Corriere della Sera.

Paul Marchetti, who is the director general of the fashion house, told Sky Italia, 'we know nothing.'

'At this moment we have great confidence in the Venezuelan authorities. We do not know anything and expect everyone to be as new,' he told reporters in Italian on Saturday, as he met with staff at the company headquarters to discuss the incident.

Waiting: Police arrive at the Missoni company headquarters in Sumirago, Varese, in northern Italy on Saturday as the family waits for news about the eldest son

The plane's disappearance on Friday drew an eerie resemblance to a January 2008 crash, when a plane carrying up to 18 total passengers, eight who were Italian, from Caracas to Los Roques went missing.

A life vest from the Czech twin-engined Let L-410 Turbolet was recovered but no wreckage or bodies were ever found.

The Italian gossip magazine, Oggi, has suggested that in the 2008 incident the plane may have been hijacked by drug traffickers and used to deliver cocaine.
The paper said that most of the family had been gathered in Sumirago, Varese, where the company is based, when they were informed of the news.

Mr Missoni owns the label with his brother Luca and sister Angela.
The brand, known for its brightly patterned knit clothes, boasts annual revenue of nearly $80

Nor does his monumental eyebag action but I just had to say something about that.

Needless to say I hope all's well, but I doubt it.

No, this is going to end up like JFK Jr - you don't hear from a small plane for this long, they're toast unfortunately.

    • Venezuelan air and sea rescue services continue to look for the plane

The director of Italian fashion house Missoni was feared dead last night when a small aircraft he was travelling in vanished off the coast of Venezuela.
Vittorio Missoni, heir to the family-owned label, and his wife, Maurizia Castiglioni, were among six people on board the twin-engine plane when it disappeared on Friday morning. Missoni's clothes have a host of celebrity fans, including the Duchess of Cambridge and Kate Moss.

The 58-year-old, who co-owns the brand with his siblings Luca and Angela, is understood to have been returning from a Christmas and New Year holiday with his wife and two friends, Italian businessman Guido Foresti and his wife Elda Scalvenzi.

Beautiful: Los Roques, a pristine archipelago of 42 islands 95 miles off Venezuela's coast. Missoni was there on a fishing holiday

Two Venezuelan pilots were also on board, German Mechan, 72, and Juan Fernandez, 45.

Last night, Venezuelan air and sea rescue services, including an ocean-searching naval vessel, continued to look for the plane, which went missing after taking off from the resort of Los Roques.

The archipelago, 95 miles off Venezuela’s coast, is a popular holiday destination.
The alarm was raised after the plane failed to land at Simon Bolivar international airport, about 12 miles from the capital Caracas.

No trace of it has been found.

Maddalena Aspes, a spokesman for Missoni, said: ‘The family has been informed by the Venezuelan consulate that Vittorio Missoni and his wife are missing.

'We don’t know any more.’ She added that relatives were travelling back to Italy from a holiday in France.

It is also understood that Mr Missoni’s younger brother Luca, the company’s creative director, is travelling to Venezuela to help in the search.
Messages of support flooded on to social media site Twitter yesterday, while Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani posted a message on the magazine’s website saying: ‘Bring Vittorio Missoni home.’
Mr Missoni worked as marketing director of the company, which was founded by his parents ex-Olympian runner Ottavio, 92, and Rosita in 1958, while his sister Angela designed both womenswear and menswear.
Kate Middleton is frequently pictured in her frayed collarless blue tweed Missoni M coat, which she bought at at an Oxfordshire designer outlet for 765.

Another plane with eight Italians on board disappeared in the same area exactly five years ago. Only the body of the co-pilot was found.

Vanished: The plane's last known position was over the sea between Los Roques and the north coast of Venezuela

Is Sofia vergara wearing body shimmer? Like she's not tacky and pageanty enough as it is.
