I woke up and thought: I want a baby. But it was too late, says pop star Lisa Stansfield

Heartache: Lisa Stansfield desperately wanted a baby after the death of her mother

Soul singer Lisa Stansfield has revealed how her desperate desire to have a baby led to years of IVF heartache.

The 46-year-old star realised she wanted to have a child after the death of her mother Marion in 2006.

‘I didn’t want children for a long, long time,’ she recalled. ‘It was something to do with having freedom and time of my own.

‘Then I woke up one morning and thought “Oh my God. I really, really want to have a baby”. And it was too late. It was around the time my mum died. I think my mum dying made the evil biological clock start ticking.

‘It is something to do with life and death. They are intricately connected. The urge was completely and utterly beyond my control.’

The singer and her husband of 24 years, Ian Devaney, 47, lived in Dublin at the time, but moved briefly to New York for an expensive course of IVF.

She said: ‘We tried it on and off for about three or four years, but it didn’t work. It was really gutting.

‘Concentrating on IVF messed up work for a while. Everything else, including my career, went on the back burner. I kept thinking “If only I had tried earlier”.

‘I really feel bad for people who have rounds and rounds of IVF. We did three and then I just said “I can’t do any more”.

‘I thought “I can’t want a child as badly as I think I do because I’m not going through this again”.’

Best known for her 1989 hit single All Around The World, Miss Stansfield has sold 20million records.

Despite her past sadness at being unable to conceive, the star insists she is now glad she did not become pregnant.

She added: ‘Now I’m back to normal. I’m glad that I never had a baby.

‘After all the IVF I just realised that I wouldn’t have wanted a life with a child. Maybe I had too much time on my hands. But now I can fill up the time with work.’

In her music heyday, Miss Stansfield, who now lives in London, was almost as famous for her looks as for her voice.
Asked about her still-youthful appearance, she said: ‘I haven’t done Botox for years.

‘It is stopping smoking that has given me my youth back, and also done wonders for my voice.’

She is now planning a comeback with her first album in eight years due for release next year and a series of concerts lined up before Christmas.

i wonder if she's just convinced herself that she doesn't want a baby now or that it would ruin her life since it wasn't happening, like a coping mechanism.

The ivf didn't take because it was mother nature's way of ensuring the husband's eyebrows weren't passed down to another generation.

Wanting the baby in the first place seemed out of her norm and a coping mechanism.

Agreed. It seemed a reaction to her mum dying. It may have given her something to concentrate on.

So she must have been 39 or 40 when she started IVF. I wish more celebrities would be honest like this instead of acting like everyone is fertile and becomes easily pregnant at that age. I am glad Lisa is in a good place about how her life worked out.

If she really wanted a baby, she might have thought about adopting one.

A lot of people don't want to adopt though, even if they do really want a baby. Good on the people who do adopt but it's not for everyone.

    She still tours.

Good for her for realizing she's better off child-free.

All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.

Sometimes people HAVE babies for selfish reasons. I think realizing that parenting is not your thing and NOT having kids is a very UNselfish act.

How is it selfish? Some people have wonderful fulfilling lives and don't want kids! More power to them!
