UPDATE, 8 p.m. ET: ABC has announced that John Ingle, who played stately Edward Quartermaine on General Hospital died Sunday, surrounded by family and friends in California, "after a courageous battle with cancer." He was 84.
John Ingle, who played stately Edward Quartermaine on General Hospital from 1992 until last week, died Sunday, reports People.com.
ABC says Ingle taped his final appearance on GH on Aug. 24, and that episode aired Sept. 11.
The soap's exec producer, Frank Valenti, tweeted the news two hours ago, writing: "With great sadness, I share the news of John Ingle's passing. We love him and will miss him. John will always be a part of the #GH family."
In 1954, Ingle married Grace-Lynn Martin, and the two remained married 58 years, until her death in February. They had five daughters, says IMDB, and nine grandchildren.
In a posting on Facebook Monday, his family said: "Father, Husband, Grandan, Great Grandan, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Teacher, Inspirer, Mentor: May You Soar with the Angels. You will forever hold a special place in the deepest corners of our hearts."

i loved him as Edward. He replaced the great David Lewis, and did a great job. they are doing a storyline where the fictional town that GH is based in has the water supply poisoned.

Tracy, his daughter, steals the antidote and gives it to her dad. He refuses, says to give it to one of the doc's kids. He looked really really frail, was in a wheelchair. So, i'm thinking they'll kill him off on the show and do a memorial.

yeah, i'm that girl who watches soaps

He just wasn't Edward to me. David Lewis was Edward Q and he and Lila were like a real married couple. Ingle was too sweet or something. They wrote him as less of a fiesty, tough business man who'd cut a bitch and made Edward obsessed with protecting all the young girls in the family.

I LOVED back in the day, Alan, Tracy and "Daddy". I had a Ingle would go soon after his wife died.

We need an soap thread so I don't have to subject myself to soapcentral in case I need to vent.

Sad to hear this but knew it wouldn't be long. I loved his Edward. One of the bright spots of GH. John Ingle will be missed.

I'm just gutted I loved him as Edward, and the creepy polygamist on big love.

I remember when Anna Lee died they had me crying for days with the memorials, I hope they do right by him.

I loved watching Edward be an ass on GH! He was a character that was fun to love/hate. He will be missed.

I was an avid GH fan for about 35 plus years, but haven't watched the show the last few years. I just got so sick of it all being about the mob and Carly/Sonny. The show totally lost its premise. I sure miss the good old days,....with GH and OLTL and AMC. I think soaps are a thing of the past.

Aww, this is so sad! I loved him on GH when I used to watch. I will have to watch and see what kind of tributes they do for him!

RIP! I agree with Chalet that David Lewis was Edward and always will be to me but Mr. Ingle seemed like such a good guy. I haven't watched GH in years but I really remember the 80's GH fondly!

NOOOOOO! I watched GH off and on over the years and grew to like him as Edward. The 'Sonny, Carly and Jason Show' totally turned me off, though.

    RIP, sir.
