Scott McKenzie, Who Sang 'San Francisco' In The Summer Of Love, Dies

He sang a gentle song that became a hit and something of a theme song for 1967's "Summer of Love."

Scott McKenzie, best known for San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair, died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 73. According to the singer's website, he "had been very ill recently and passed away in his home after two weeks in hospital." The Associated Press says he "had battled Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system, and had been in and out of the hospital since 2010."

San Francisco, the AP reminds us, was written by John Phillips of The Mamas and the Paps. McKenzie could write songs as well. He co-wrote The Beach Boys' 1988 hit Kokomo.

Aww! He was such good friends with John Phillips that John named his daughter Mackenzie after him.

    RIP.

^^When I was a wee kid, I used to think he was singing "be sure to wear sunflowers in your hair".

Which one? I kinda like "San Francisco" but "Kokomo" sucks and is up (or down) there as a terrible song with "I just called to say I love you" by Stevie Wonder.

oh no, i love that song, too. RIP.

i googled the disease he had, it sounds pretty bad. i hope he didn't choke.

    just in case someone's interested...

Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) (French pronunciation: [ɡiˈlɛ̃ baˈʁe], English pronunciation: /ˈɡlænˈbɑr/), sometimes Landry's paralysis or Guillain–Barré–Strohl syndrome, is an acute polyneuropathy, a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. Ascending paralysis and/or weakness, beginning in the feet and hands and migrating towards the trunk, is the most typical symptom, and some subtypes cause change in sensation or pain as well as dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. It can cause life-threatening complications, in particular if the respiratory muscles are affected or if there is autonomic nervous system involvement. The disease is usually triggered by an infection.

Oh, shit shit shit. This guy had a wonderful Facebook. Were any of you on it? If not, you really, REALLY missed out. A dear friend of mine got to be pretty good friends with him on there, just chatting. I'm gonna have to go give her a call. This will upset her terribly.

Seriously you guys, he created the most wonderful circle of friends on stupid fucking FB, this core group of nice folks who had so much fun talking and sharing and hanging out. It was a powerful example of what one CAN do with that site (unlike the melodramatic attention whore hash most people make of it...grrr...thinking of some idiot family members here.)

He was a genuinely sweet, kind, interesting old guy. I had some great exchanges with him myself so this really hits close to home. I haven't been on FB for the last couple of months; I didn't know he'd taken a turn for the worse.

I just can't tell you how much this actually, totally SUCKS.

eta: here's a link to his FB page. It's open as long as you are actually logged into FB, you don't have to be his friend. https://www.facebook.com/scott.mckenzie.1217

e again ta: I LOVE that fucking song!!! so suck it, haters.

I was sad when I heard about this. I have San Francisco on my main mp3 playlist, tucked inbetween all the rock and metal. R.I.P Scott
