Helen Gurley Brown, Legendary Cosmopolitan Editor, Dead at 90

Helen Gurley Brown, the legendary editor who presided over Cosmopolitan for three decades, has died at age 90, according to the Hearst Corporation.

Brown, a former copywriter, took over Cosmopolitan in 1965, three years after writing the bestselling Sex and the Single Girl, and turned the magazine into a bible for independent, ambitious women. She remained editor-in-chief until 1997.

Edith Zimmerman recently wrote about Brown in a New York Times Magazine article about Cosmopolitan:

At 90, Brown maintains a delightfully incongruous pink corner office in the gleaming Hearst Tower on 57th Street in Manhattan. And although somewhat retired, she remains something of a spiritual godmother for the dozens of international editors trying to implement her ideas in their own countries. " ‘Sex and the Single Girl' is still the G.P.S. to being W.O.W. - a well-turned-out woman!" explained the editor of Cosmo South Africa, Sbu Mpungose. As has been the case with other newer Cosmos, the first issue of Cosmo Azerbaijan, in 2011, included a feature on Brown: "It was absolutely necessary for girls in our country to know who she is," the magazine's editor, Leyla Orujova, explained.

Akisheva, the editor in Kazakhstan, told me that until recently, she received a handwritten note from Brown after the publication of each issue. "Our readers might not be very familiar with Helen Gurley Brown's books and biography," she said, "but they surely are influenced by her original ideas. Because this is what Cosmo keeps telling them: You are strong, you can control your life, you can earn as much as men do and you can have sex before marriage and not be condemned by society."

    RIP.

And I kinda agree with Sput now but in its heyday, Cosmo broke new ground.

Ah, but when she took the reins, it was cutting edge and got women to think about themselves in ways they'd never considered before.

Now Cosmo is self-hating tripe, but in it's day under Helen's leadership, it was pretty awesome.

    RIP

I'm not a big fan of Helen's, even if she did encourage women to be sexually liberated. She also encouraged women to sleep with married men for gifts and cash, justifying it because women get paid less among a million other things I disagreed with.

I know she's of a different era and all, but she always skeeved me out. I think it's cool she made it big in the era that she lived in, so I respect her achievement, but not her philosophy.

    . . . .
i agree with this. plus, she was REALLY unsympathetic to sexual harrassment in the office - she considered it not a big deal and also that women should be flattered by the attention.

^ She seemed to find it difficult to step outside her own personal experiences. She felt overlooked and 'mouse burgered' her way to the top.

I'm not the biggest fan of hers. Like others have said, I just can't get behind some of her views, but I'll give credit where it's due. HGB was a trailblazer and I definitely respect that. RIP Helen.
