Default Lupe Ontiveros, 69, dies of liver cancer‎

Lupe Ontiveros, the Mexican-American star of As Good as it Gets and the TV show Desperate Housewives, has died of liver cancer. She was 69.
Born Guadalupe Moreno, Ontiveros's Hollywood career spanned four decades and included roles in the 80s classic The Goonies and the 2002 film Real Women Have Curves, for which she won a special jury prize at the Sundance film festival. In Selena, a drama based on the life of the late Tejano musician, she garnered critical acclaim for her performance as Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of murdering the singer in 1995. Another big role came through Gregory Nava's El Norte (1983), in which she played Nacha, a maid who is tasked with looking after a young immigrant from Guatemala.

Jacob Vargas, who co-starred with Ontiveros in Selena, was with the actor shortly before she died. "My friend Lupe Ontiveros just passed away," he tweeted. "May you rest in peace. Thank you for your great contribution to film and TV. You will be missed."
Other notable big screen roles include her co-starring slot as mentor to a disturbed wannabe playwright in the 2000 black comedy Chuck & Buck. Elsewhere, Todd Solondz's 2001 film Storytelling provided the actor with a bumper payload of revenge with her turn as the downtrodden housekeeper who torches the home of her employers.
Despite these highlights Ontiveros struggled to find variety in the parts she was offered, stating often that she had played "the Maid" hundreds of times. These characters were often colourful caricatures – stereotypically feisty Latinas who acted as a foil for the principals.

She found more interesting work on television, where she had cameos on King of the Hill and Hill Street Blues, and in the theatre with the LA-based Latino Theater Company, of which she was a founding member.
In 2010, she was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. A video filmed for the presentation ceremony showed Ontiveros talking about her life and how she'd like to be remembered. "I can say I had a very interesting and fulfilling life, full of challenges," she said. "From the set to the grave, from the stage to the grave. That's the way I want to go."

What a horrid way to go out. I hope she did not suffer long.

I didn't know she was sick. I think I first saw her in Selena, but I really liked her in Desperate Housewives.

I've never seen Selena, but she was really good in Real Women Have Curves

You really need to watch Selena!!!!!! I think it was Jennifer Lopez's first movie. Edward James Olmos was in it too. It's awesome cheesiness. One of the first movies I made my Brit husband watch when he came over to the states. I can never say the name Selena without pronouncing it like this guy below ...

An emotional and upset Eva Longoria was comforted at the funeral of Lupe Ontiveros by friend Wilmer Valderrama, yesterday.

The two small screen stars joined over 800 family and friends who gathered at the St. Hilary Church of Perpetual Adoration to say goodbye to Ontiveros, who died July 26 at 69.

Longoria, 37, was clearly saddened by the loss and was seen crying as she left the service in Pico Rivera, California.

Sad times: Eva Longoria and Wilmer Valderrama left the funeral service for the late Lupe Ontiveros, yesterday

The former Desperate Housewives star looked distraught but was comforted by her good friend Wilmer Valderrama who also attended the funeral.

The pair met not too far from the church and both looked smartly dressed in traditional black attire.

Wilmer, 32, wore a suit, shirt and tie while Eva looked elegant in a well fitted dress with matching heels and sunglasses.

Lean on me: The two small screen stars had joined over 800 people in the church in Pico Rivera, California

Back to black: Both Eva and Wilmer wore the traditional funeral colours to say goodbye to their friend

Longoria and Ontiveros worked together on Desperate Housewives as bickering in-laws but they were good friends off screen.

Their relationship was such that Eva was asked to read a passage from the Bible as requested by Lupe.

Fighting back tears she said: 'But the just man, though he die early, shall be at rest.

Walk with me: Eva read a passage from the Bible during the service and fought back tears

Farewell: Over 800 family and friends who gathered at the St. Hilary Church of Perpetual Adoration to say goodbye to Ontiveros

Long standing: Lupe had her funeral at the same church she had attended for over 30 years

'For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years.'

With every pew in the church filled, a quietness had taken over the congregation as former co-stars, political activists and mayors of Los Angeles and Pico Rivera all said goodbye.

Many of the attendees signed a large portrait of Lupe and left personal touching messages for their much loved friends.

Famous friends: Former LA Law actor Jimmy Smits said a personal goodbye to Lupe as he stood over her coffin

Eternal rest: Ontiveros is best known for playing the convicted murderer Yolanda Saldivar in the hit 1997 film Selena

Eternal star: Friends and family wrote messages on a large portrait of Lupe outside of the church

One message read: 'Lupe, I will never forget that vase you gave me,' and another said 'Thank you for all the joy you brought.'

Eva took to Twitter to express her feelings and said: 'My heart is broken today saying goodbye to Lupe Ontiveros at her beautiful funeral. "She was the mother of our culture"-Eddie Olmos'.

She added: 'The amount of people showing their love and support today was overwhelming and I'm sure Lupe was smiling down at us today...#RIPLupeOntiveros'.

See you soon: Eva and Wilmer hugged before going their separate ways after the emotionally draining day

Eva took to Twitter to express her feelings and said: 'My heart is broken today saying goodbye to Lupe Ontiveros'

Once the funeral had ended Eva and Wilmer walked through the car park and said a tearful farewell with a long hug.

Ontiveros is best known for playing the convicted murderer Yolanda Saldivar in the hit 1997 film Selena, and was also an advocate for the fight against HIV/AIDS, and often co-hosted the Latino Commission on AIDS' fundraiser.

She died at the age of 69 following a battle with liver cancer, and was buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
