Dane Cook's comic timing could use a little polishing.

Just under a week after a gunman killed 12 and injured dozens of others at an Aurora, Colorado, screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," Cook joked Thursday night that the movie was so bad that the victims were likely hoping to be killed anyway.

"This movie is pretty much a piece of crap," Cook opined at Hollywood's Laugh Factory, before launching into his joke. "I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like, ‘Ugh fucking shoot me.'"

Cook's wisecrack was met with a mixture of laughs and groans from the audience.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Cook's joke has likewise met with a lukewarm reaction online.

"Wow, Dane Cook. Please be more pathetic and desperate for attention," one tweeter wrote.

"Too soon? Too soon," BuzzFeed opined.

Cook has not yet addressed his controversial choice of humor on his Twitter account, but he did write yesterday, "I've got a feeling something really bad is about happen but I'm gonna stick around to see if I'm right."

    Yeah, no kidding.

Cook's comedy pilot "Next Caller," starring the comedian as an alpha-male DJ, received a six-episode order from NBC earlier this year. NBC had no comment on Cook's joke for TheWrap.

    1)A tragedy happens
2)Comedian makes a joke about it
3)People are shocked that a comedian said something offensive.

The one time that Dane Cooke DOESN'T steal another comedian's joke, THIS happens.

    Nevermind, he's actually devastated.

Dane Cook Apologizes for Massacre Joke -- 'Bad Judgment Call'

    Breaking News

Dane Cook has issued an apology for cracking a joke about the "Dark Knight Rises" massacre ... saying he regrets telling the joke ... and admits it was a "bad judgment call."

Cook just posted a statement on Twitter saying, "I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened."

"I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims."

As we previously reported, Cook's controversial joke went something like this ... The Batman movie is so bad, had the killing spree not occurred, the people inside of the theater would have been begging for someone to shoot them.

The whole thing went down Thursday night at The Laugh Factory on the Sunset Strip ... and was captured on tape. The footage was later posted to the website DailyCaller.com

Yes, it's too soon. But even if he told this joke a year from now it would still be pathetically obvious, unoriginal and unfunny.

This would have been "funny", or at least more tolerated a year or two from now. Actually, he's unfunny in general so maybe shock is all he has to go for now. Fuck him sideways.

How does anyone think this is funny AT ALL? What kind of level of insensitivity do you have to have to crack jokes about this?
