What a gem! For his surprise proposal on American Idol Wednesday night, Ace Young selected an 18-karat yellow gold, platinum and diamond engagement ring to present to longtime girlfriend Diana DeGarmo.

The David Webb sparkler, which features a 1-carat fancy yellow center stone, also boasts two side diamonds weighing .2 carats.

Young helped to design the ring, after hearing DeGarmo drop a hint. “A month ago, she said, ‘Gold needs to come back,’” Young told PEOPLE after Wednesday’s finale. “I was like, ‘I agree,’ so mental note. Her favorite thing is a sunflower and she loves yellow, so one of our dear friends [helped me] put together a ring that has a yellow diamond, a gold band and two smaller diamonds on the side that are clear, so it’s like a sunflower.”

The couple, who’ve been together for two years, met in the spring of 2010 when both signed on to costar in the Broadway revival of the musical Hair. DeGarmo appeared on Idol season three, while Young was on season five.

Ace Young: How I Planned a Live TV Wedding Proposal

It was the engagement seen 'round the world Wednesday night on American Idol, so how did Ace Young manage to pull off his surprise proposal to fiancée Diana DeGarmo?

With a little help from his Idol family, it turns out.

"I called [producer] Nigel [Lythgoe] directly last week and said, 'I want to do this. I'm going to do this. Is there any way I could do it at the show?' " Young, 31, told PEOPLE at the Ford-sponsored American Idol season 11 finale post party. "He said 'Yes, I'm not going to tell anybody until the day of ... [and] I want you to figure it out with Ryan [Seacrest]."

But DeGarmo, 24, who was "completely caught off guard," almost thwarted Young's big plan at the last minute.

"I actually almost got up to go to the bathroom to fix my hair," she said, laughing. "And then I just started shaking [on stage]."

As his fiancée showed off her new sparkler at the party, Young explained what went into the making of the ring.

I don't mind the style of ring, the three stone deal is sorta traditional. The yellow stone makes it look dingy and dirty tho, like it

I never knew either. Didn't even know she is Idol Alumni. Didn't know who the heck Ace was.

I think Ace was engaged before, around the time when he was on AI. And then he started doing a play with Diana (no idea who she is) and he eyed her from day 1. He claims he and Diana were just BFFs and then he split with the fiancée and hooked up with Diana. I think they was probably some cheating involved, but at least he wasn't married. He strikes me as an opportunist, PR whore and player. I could be totally wrong though!
