Default Bee Gees star Robin Gibb in coma

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb in a coma as his family keeps bedside vigil - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Bee Gees star Robin Gibb is in a coma and has pneumonia, the latest turn in health issues that include a recent battle with colon and liver cancer, his representative confirmed Saturday.
Doctors believe that Gibb, 62, has a secondary tumor, representative Doug Wright said, confirming a news account in The Sun in the United Kingdom. Gibb had emergency surgery in 2010 for a blocked bowel and then had more surgery for a twisted bowel, Wright confirmed.
His brother Maurice died in 2003 of a twisted bowel.
Brother Andy died at age 30 from a heart infection.
The Brothers Gibb -- calling themselves the Bee Gees -- soared to renown as one of the most successful British groups after the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever" starring John Travolta was built around the group's disco songs.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the Bee Gees have sold more than 200 million albums, and their soundtrack album to "Saturday Night Fever" was the top-selling album until Michael Jackson's "Thriller" claimed that distinction in the 1980s.

A horrendous time for any family. We’ve all been there.

Wow, this is so sad. The Bee Gees bring back a lot of memories of my childhood. I remember having this panda bear transister radio that I would hang off the handle bars of my Schwinn bike. I always think of that radio when I hear their songs. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Sad for the family. Awesome harmonies - I prefer their music pre-Saturday Night Fever - but enjoyed that era as well.

My memory is not what it used to be but it states in the OP that Andy died of a heart infection. I always thought he OD'd???? (Maybe it was drug abuse that lead to illness?) I'll google later.

Really feel for his family especially his mother who has outlived almost all of her children.

No, he died of myocardatis, an inflammation of the pocket around the heart, 5 days after his 30th birthday, right in front of his mom! His doctor had just explained that they were going to get him later for some more tests and he answered "Okay", sighed and was gone. His heart did have damage from his previous drug addiction but also from a congenital heart defect (Barry & 1 of his sons has it, too).

Thank you! My memory definetly did not include this detail. That is a heartbreaking story!

    ......dead yet?

    Sorry, had to be done.

No seriously, he's still alive right? Certainly doesn't sound good.

After more than a week, Robin Gibb has woken up from his coma. Now, this could mean anything, in his condition: a last flare up for goodbyes and then death. Or a tiny bit of hope for another remission.

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb wakes from coma

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has woken from a coma after more than a week and begun to show signs of recovery.

Spokesman Doug Wright said he was able to nod and communicate with his family who have held a constant vigil at his beside in a central London hospital.

The 62-year-old fell into a coma after contracting pneumonia in his battle against colon and liver cancer.

Gibb's wife Dwina has revealed he cried when she played him Roy Orbison's 1962 song Crying.

Fellow Bee Gees star Barry Gibb had also been singing to his brother to try to rouse him.

Dwina Gibb told her local paper The Impartial Reporter, based in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland their children Robin John, Spencer and Melissa have been playing him music to "try and bring him back to us".

    Facebook tributes
She said thousands of people have been saying prayers for him every day, and thanked his fans for their support.

In February Gibb said he had made a "spectacular" recovery from cancer but was later back in hospital for surgery.

Gibb was too ill to attend last week's premiere of his latest work The Titanic Requiem, a classical piece composed with his son to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

He was due to sing Don't Cry Alone in person at Central Hall Westminster in London.

The singer's website is down because of traffic volumes, with fans directed to his Facebook page, where messages of support can be left.

The British-born singer had surgery on his bowel 18 months ago for an unrelated condition, but a tumour was discovered and he was diagnosed with cancer of the colon and later of the liver.

It had been thought his cancer was in remission as early as last month.

Robin Gibb's musical career began when he formed the Bee Gees with his brothers Barry and Maurice in 1958.

The group is among the biggest-selling groups of all time with hits spanning six decades including Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts, and Words.

Their soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever was one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s and the band have won seven Grammy Awards.

Robin's twin brother Maurice Gibb died in 2003 aged 53 due to complications from a twisted intestine.

His younger brother Andy, who had a successful solo career, died of a heart ailment in 1988, aged 30.

Gibb last performed on stage at the London Palladium in February, supporting injured servicemen and women in a charity concert.

He must have a very strong will.

McJag, you are right. As long as he's not suffering.
