Leading songwriter Linda Perry has slammed Katy Perry and has said she is part of the reason why "the music industry is in turmoil".
Linda Perry, who has written hit singles for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Pink, has said that Katy Perry is "not giving substance" with her albums, compared to someone like Adele.
Speaking to writer Heath Daniels, the songwriter cited Perry as someone whose career is simply built around hit singles and that the other tracks on her album "are going to be crap".

She said:

I'm not a huge fan of Adele but that's a solid record and it's selling. That means people are still buying records. It's the crappy, like, who wants a Katy Perry record? I'm sorry, but you're going to get the two songs that are probably the hits that are good, but the rest of the album is going to be crap. It's going to sound like shit.

She continued:

So people download the single, and that's it. She's great for what she does, but she's not reinventing the wheel, she's not giving substance, she's just giving microwave popcorn to feast on right at this moment. She's not looking to change the world musically, so all the power to her. I'm not saying that's bad, I'm saying it's not what I participate in. That's part of the reason why the music business is in turmoil.

Yup. The biggest part of the reason why the music business is in turmoil is because it's a business, not an artistic industry, anymore. They push sex because it sells, they push sugary bullshit meaningless pop hits because they sell (and do well on stupid pop radio stations). It's all about marketing and making money, not about the actual art of music. Katy Perry is a good icon of this problem, but I don't even really blame her. She's not very good, and she tried the Christian-Pop gimmick and failed, so she's doing whatever she can to have a successful career -- and by "successful" I mean she'll make the most money. Ugh.

I may be rusty but I have to say this. I grew up with Britney and Christina. Pink was okay but I never liked her that much. Didnt get into Gwen Stefani until she left No Doubt. Katy Perry, I honestly dont like her but shes made a few catchy songs. Adele is a whole different league from these people and I only like one of her songs. My point here is that she wants to compare these people and thats not fair. What have any of these people done in years? No one is reinventing the wheel, its the same crap from everyone. The music industry is in turmoil because it sucks. Ill never forget buying a few CDs years ago and being mad because only two or three songs were good, the rest were horrible. Or one where they had the audacity to have half the CD in English, the other in Spanish. Same songs mind you, just a different language. Oh, thats funny, that happened to the exact same people she wrote songs for. The problem isnt them, its the entire industry.

During my daily 2.5 hour round trip commute, I hear Pink, Katy, Gag, and Adele at least 6 times in an hour. You can tell which record label has the most money because their acts are the ones that are played to death on the radio.

oh please, linda perry sucks ass, she shouldn't be one to talk. whether it's her own stuff or the shit she writes for others. for years we were hounded by that stupid song she sang with 4 non blondes, and then she started terrorising again writing trash for others. this bitch is responsible for that christina aguilera crapfest 'beautiful' and for that alone i hate her guts.

my sister had that shitty 4 non blondes album (give her a break, she was 9) and other than the super annoying 'hit' song that was everywhere, no one remembers a single song on that album. and for good reason, it was crappy filler.

i'm not a huge fan of adele either but anything adele does is way better than the shit this chick churns out for other artists. adele writes her own stuff so perry's probably just pissed she can't climb on the adele bandwagon and get paid millions to write her some cheesy ballad like 'beautiful'.
