Default Halle Berry’s Half-sister says Halle Disowned her Black Family

The estranged sister of actress Halle Berry recently spoke out about their relationship, especially in light of the custody issues that the actress has been having over her two-year old daughter. The actress’s half-sister Renee Berry accused the Oscar winner of cutting off the African-American side of her family.

Renee Berry, a food service worker from Alabama, is desperate to reconnect with her famous sister. Renee recently said that she hopes the actress will let “bygones by bygones” and admits that she would like to be involved in her life once again.

Renee Berry, the half-sister of actress Halle Berry, says that the actress has cut herself off from their family. Renee, the daughter of Halle’s late African-American father Jerome Berry and Edwina Taylor, says she remained “very close” to Halle while they were growing up (and Jerome was involved with Halle's mother, Judith Hawkins) but things have changed.

"I’m sad to say it seems like she does not want anything to do with us. I have not spoken to her in about five years. I tried to contact her through her website, to congratulate her on her Oscar, but no one got back to me. She used to be very close to my brother Anthony, but she’s cut herself off from him now too. It makes us very upset—none of us understand why she feels the way she does.”

    She continued...

“We would love to meet Nahla. We are desperate to understand why Halle is so upset, why she feels she cannot be with us. Halle will always be my baby sister… It is sad because our grandmother Cora, who died in 2003, did not raise us to be apart like this.”

One point of tension between the sisters was their relationship with their dad Jerome.

In previous interviews, Halle said Jerome was abusive.

"I saw my mother battered, and could not do anything to stop it. My father was tyrannical, lashing out at her for no reason. I felt the effects that had on our family – I’ve experienced what these women have gone through.”

But Renee remembers Jerome in a different light.

“My father never beat any of us. He would spank us from time to time, but he never abused us,” said Renee. “He liked a drink or two, like anyone else does, but he was not an alcoholic.”

They have different mothers, so I assume this sister may not have been around when Halle and her mother were being abused.

Don't jump on me for saying something that might be semi in Halle's defence but when you cut someone like a parent out of your life it can make it very, very difficult to have or build a relationship with any siblings they might have had in another relationship. I'm in a similar position with two younger half siblings. I can't get involved with them without opening the door to the sperm donor. I don't want him in my life and I don't want him knowing anything about me and if I accept/build a relationship with the half-sibs then that will inevitably happen.

No, I completely see where you're coming from Kittylady, and I agree. Sometimes people have good reasons, even if they're not apparent to others.

Having the same father doesn't make people family. It makes them related, but family is something else entirely. There's probably a lot more to this story!

I agree with both of you. Actually, her half-sister's account sounds like your typical family member who is in denial about abuse in the family. The whistle blower gets all the blame ("how could she leave us!") when in reality, the siblings who stick to the abuser are the ones betraying the victim ("he just spanked us" = "you are lying and/or crazy").

So just this one time I will say, Team Halle.

Gotta love that glamour shot of the sis in her halter dress holding the rose. I'm sure she was just relaxing on her piano after a hard day's work in food service.

Wonder how much $$ she was paid for the interview and pic of Halle. But she's only after a relationship with her little sister, of course.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Halle seems the type to embellish heavily and the sister probably has ulterior motives.

I have nothing to do with my fathers family...including my half sister. My father didn't abuse me or my mother, he just ignored us. After my parents divorced, he pretended I didn't exist. So did the rest of his family. Even my grandparents. I just don't feel the need to have them in my life, nice people or not.

BUT, I still think Halle may be the problem in a lot of her relationships (certainly not in the case of abuse, but you know what I mean)...
