    Default M.I.A.: “I don’t wanna say Jay-Z sold out, but…”

    M.I.A.: “I don’t wanna say Jay-Z sold out, but…”

M.I.A. has a new interview in Complex Magazine to promote her new album (the one with the ginger-holocaust song). There’s only one part of the interview that’s being widely circulated (at MTV and Bossip), but the full online interview is pretty good. I just skimmed it, but M.I.A. is an interesting woman. She’s just come off a hiatus from her career, having gotten married to Ben Bronfman, the son of Warner Music Group CEO and billionaire Edgar Bronfman Jr. Oh, she had a baby too - if you married the son of a billionaire, wouldn’t you get knocked up in a hurry too? Anyway, the biggest quotes are about Jay-Z and Nas. Ruh-roh.
M.I.A. has shared her thoughts on the difference between Jay-Z and Nas in a recent interview.
The rapper/singer explained that both of the rap stars took different routes to success.
She told Complex Magazine: “Jay became the biggest representation of rap music who’s still alive, started dating Beyoncé, everything was so much bigger and better with Jay-Z. I hope people don’t think that that wins.”
“The fact that Nas didn’t become all this sort of stuff changes people’s perception about the music and the work he achieved in his lifetime. I don’t wanna say Jay-Z sold out, but I just feel like we have to wait another 10 years to see what happens.”
“Jay-Z’s ambition was to become like Frank Sinatra, a household name all over the planet, and own a casino in Vegas and stuff like that. And I think Nas was really sticking to knowledge. I still think the biggest point about hip-hop is in there somewhere, what happens to those two artists.”
    [From MTV]
Is Jay-Z a sellout? Yes, maybe, of course, not really, something like that. Personally, I think Jay-Z has “sold out” in a relatively minor way - it’s not like he’s out shilling Pro-Active or something. Jay’s a smart businessman, and that’s one of the reasons he appeals to me, at least. Plus, girls who marry sons of billionaires shouldn’t pontificate on keepin’ it real, I think.

Oh please, every musician, actor, writer, artist, etc is accused of selling out when they become successful. This shit has been thrown around for forever. Jesus was probably accused of selling out.

What exactly is a sell out ? Because I've seen that label attached to nearly everyone with success

^^ Pretty much. God forbid you succeed in realizing your dreams and then enjoy the rewards you've reaped.

Jay Z is indeed courting anyone and anything mainstream.

    ^^I beg to differ...

I have been a fan of Jay-Z's when he was just a collaboration on a song. He hasn't sold out, his life and finances changed. Yes, when he started he was still living, wanting, and dreaming the hood-rich lifestyle.. Now, he's the CEO... So it would be fake of him to try and rap about his 'everyday struggle/hustle' when he is a multi-millionaire..

Outside of Jay-Z's poor taste in women, I wouldn't say that he's sold out. He understands better than most rappers, like M.I.A., that hip-hop is a business and you have to treat it like that. If more rappers understood that wealth & power wasn't just about bling and street cred they'd have the money & clout that people like Jay-Z, P-Shitty and 50 Cent have.

And it's not about whether Jay-Z sold out or not & whether or not Nas didn't. Jay-Z kept putting out good music and Nas fell off. Simple as that. Of course, Jay-Z will NEVER be the new Sinatra, no matter how hard he tries.

Jay-Z will be here 10 years from now, I guarantee it. M.I.A. on the other hand? Girl, please.

And not all artists come from money or are lucky enough to marry billionaires the way she has.

I have never heard of M.I.A. I have heard of Jay-Z. That should say something right there.

Also, I never heard any of his music before the Betty White SNL gig, and while it's not my cuppa tea, it wasn't horrendous, either. Not so bad at all.
