    Juan-Carlos Cruz -- Murder/Suicide Plan

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Juan-Carlos Cruz was allegedly involved in a Shakespearean plot to kill his wife and then kill himself -- and it's all over their inability to have babies.

Sources say the Santa Monica Police Department and the L.A. County District Attorney are fully aware 47-year-old Jennifer Campbell has been despondent for years over her infertility and has spoken openly to friends that she wanted to end her life.

But Campbell is a deeply religious, practicing Catholic and the church views suicide as a mortal sin.

Our law enforcement sources say the information police and prosecutors have "is absolutely clear" -- Cruz was trying to honor his wife's wishes by ending her life. He then planned on killing himself.

As TMZ first reported, Cruz -- who hosted a show on The Food Network -- allegedly approached 3 homeless men in Santa Monica to kill Jennifer.

I thought I'd seen something of this posted, but I can't find it now....

Oh, plus..... Their priest needs shooting too if they/she was so dispondent for years over her infertility. He's supposed to help....

JFC! If someone you supposedly love and have been with for 20-something years starts talking about killing themselves you get them psychiatric help, not a bloody hitman! I wonder if he'd have gone through with his 'suicide' part of the plan after she was dead? Oh, wait, whoops! Suicide is a mortal sin, so even if he confessed to his priest and was granted absolution he would still be headed straight to hell while she got to do all the sitting-on-a-cloud-twanging-a-harp shit. Unless St Peter considered asking your husband to get someone else to kill you a form of suicide, compounded by the fact that you are asking others to take a life to meet your own desires, then it'd be a one way trip doooown! I'm overthinking this too much, aren't I? *cough* Aaaanyway...

What about all the "it's God's plan" stuff that religious people keep spouting? If you want to believe that everything happens for a reason then maybe it was "God's plan" that they give their love to children who were in need of adoptive or foster parents.

Depression is a really sad state of mind, if her husband loves her I'm sure it's hard for him too. Not being able to have a baby after years of trying can cause you to become depressed, maybe she had a few miscarriages as well.

Where there is life there is hope, and maybe she will get it together with some help. Killing someone is not helping them and I'm sure she wouldn't want her husband to go to hell for trying to "help" her.

Adoption isn't a option until she gets her own head straight.

Firstly, I love you when you think out loud! Soooo funny! Secondly, exactly, which was why I wondered what their priest was doing...? I thought that there were lots of unwed-mothers-homes with penguins *cough* nuns running them.... or was that just up to the 1960s?

    Thank you Novice!

AFAIK, there are still plenty of Catholic-run adoption agencies, so I wouldn't be surprised if they still had unwed mother homes as well. They probably just have fancier names for them now, although I expect that the nuns are still handpicked to be bearded devils designed to scare the everlivin' shite out of single mothers-to-be.

I know that adoption is something that would/should only come after the emotional issues had been dealt with, but after all those years of trying for a child and it not happening they (or at least her husband) would have had enough sense to seek professional help to come to terms with the fact that a natural pregnancy was not going to occur? I wonder if they had one of those priests who thinks you can 'pray the sad away'?

And I still have my doubts about the whole "it was to save her from the mortal sin of suicide" BS. Betcha a dollar that he wouldn't have kept his end of the bargain and would have played the grief stricken hubs to the police after the "random and senseless murder" of his wife. Plus, he's a cheap bastard as well. He was willing to pay two guys a measly grand to off her? That's only $500 each! The man is tighter than a goldfish's arse.

If I'm ever stoopid enough enter into a suicide pact with someone I'm going to demand that we do something like blow ourselves up while handcuffed to each other. I'm a cynical bitch and I'd want to make sure that the mo-fo is going with me.

December 13, 2010 3:40 PM Juan-Carlos Cruz Sentenced: Food Network Chef Gets Nine Years for Murder-for-Hire Plot

    Posted by Kevin Hayes
    Juan-Carlos Cruz (CBS)

LOS ANGELES (CBS/KCBS/AP) Former Food Network chef Juan-Carlos Cruz was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison for soliciting two homeless men to kill his wife.
The former "Calorie Commando" TV chef pleaded no contest Oct. 26 to charges that he hired the homeless men to kill his wife, reports CBS station KCBS.

Looking considerably grayer than he did during his arrest in May, Cruz turned to catch one more glimpse of his wife Jennifer Campbell as he was led from the brief hearing. She was seated in the front row of the courtroom with her attorney.

Defense attorney Shawn Chapman Holley said Cruz is expected to serve half of the nine-year term because no serious, violent felony was committed.

Cruz was arrested in May by Santa Monica police after a homeless man reported being offered $500 to kill his wife Jennifer L. Campbell, a 47-year-old attorney.

Prosecutors have not released a motive in the case, and Campbell and Holley declined comment Monday.

Police say they set up a sting operation and videotaped Cruz arranging the killing with several homeless men.

Cruz hosted the "Calorie Commando" show on the Food Network that ended four years ago, and also published "The Calorie Countdown Cookbook."

Never heard of this guy. He'll be out in 4 years if he behaves. Really, he seems to post no threat to the public at large.

I always thought this is what happened with Sid and Nancy. I am not getting the full story though, is the wife for or against him?
