I have always loved Charles Grodin. Now I love him even more!
I agreed to be a guest on Marion Grodin's talk-show pilot at Gotham Comedy Club because she's hilariously observant and also because I knew that her dad, actor/writer Charles Grodin, wouldn't disappoint me backstage. He didn't. As someone handed him a video of Rosemary's Baby to sign, Grodin turned to me and said, "Polanski was an asshole! And that was before he raped the 14-year-old!"
"And before his wife got killed," chimed in another guest, comic Colin Quinn.
"I played the gynecologist," continued Grodin, "and Mia Farrow says to me, 'I feel like I'm giving birth to the devil.' Now, most of my clients probably haven't given birth to the devil, so I felt I should pause before I say, 'You may be right.' Polanski said, 'Don't take pause!' That's how he talked.
"I pleaded my case," continued Grodin, not taking pause, "and you know what he said? 'I get paid big money to do this!' I thought, 'At this point, I may not get paid big money, but I have a big reputation. I'm wanted everywhere.' " He and the asshole eventually worked it out, but co-star John Cassavetes had developed his own allergies to the Polish auteur version of Jerry Lee Lewis. "John wanted to punch him out," related Grodin, simply.

“Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."
My respect for him just doubled!

Since you're all in a loving mood, I'll tell you that I catered his wedding, must have been in the early 80's.
It was a quiet, in somebody's home type of wedding, late in the day. An impressive small guest of list of truly talented people. One story - Renee Taylor (Sylvia on The Nanny) who is just the greatest, got, shall we say, toasted. The sang "the bride cuts, the cake, the bride cuts the cake" etc.
Renee then pushes Grodin's little old lady mother towards the cake, singing "the mother in law cuts the cake, the mother in law cuts the cake". The mother had the wind knocked out of her. Renee's husband, Joe Bologna, pulls Renee back nicely, like omg, knock it off Renee. That moment needed a little recovery time if you know what I mean.
John was so damn talented. Charles is great! Now was it implied in the movie that Dr. Hill was part of the cult as well? Or did Dr. Saperstein and Guy just convince Dr. Hill that Rosemary was crazy
I liked Charles in Heaven Can Wait.
I liked him in Heart and Souls! It's nice to hear someone not suck Polanski's cock all the time.
"Not only do we embrace it, we take it out for drinks, get it absolutely steaming drunk, leg hump it and then leave it covered in shaving foam and a stolen Chuck E Cheese outfit in its own bath with no recollection of how it got there." -Kittylady on the sad and pathetic and strange.
I'd have paid gold coin to see Cassavetes clothesline Polanski.
Love him too...I think my favorite was "The Heartbreak Kid" with Cybill Shepherd. I was thinking about it recently when I saw the awful Ben Stiller remake on tv.
