Default Will Smith turns down Marvin Gaye biopic

    April 4th, 2010 5:00pm EDT

Will Smith has turned down the lead role in moviemaker Cameron Crowe's new Marvin Gaye biopic. The actor spent months in negotiations to portray the legendary soul man, and now Crowe, who has been trying to get the project off the ground for four years, is without a leading man again.

But the Almost Famous director isn't rushing to find his Gaye - he's determined to hire the right man for the role.
Crowe tells Daily Variety, "It's all about getting the contact high in a movie theatre that you can get from music. A record can change your life. Somebody poured their life into that little piece of music. To me that's a hero."

I wonder why the negotiations fell through.

Good. Will Smith would have been horrible in this roll. They need to find some hot young unknown who will deliver one amazing performance. Marvin Gaye....phwoar!

I agree. Will Smith would have been ridiculous. The first thing I thought is this would be a great opportunity for an unknown.

too bad ben harper's not an actor, i think he could have pulled it off, looks-wise. thank god they didn't go with will smith, i seriously can't stand him, even though this will probably be just another run-of-the-mill hollywood biopic that brings nothing new or original to the story. boooooring.

Okay. Maybe there is a god.

Marvin oozed sex appeal. Offering the role to sexless Will Smith is telling me that Cameron does not get Marvin Gaye at all. That is quite the shame, because a movie about him done well would be fascinating and overdue.

Will is a decent actor, but there's no way in hell he could pull off playing Marvin. Glad he was smart enough to realize it and dropped out.

But a bio of Marvin does need to happen. He had a great career and a tragic/self-destructive life. A waste of talent.

bet it was money.. he likes the big blockbusters because you get big bucks, no big bucks in character films - just little Oscars.

Usher has the chops, I don't know if he can act and well he's not good looking, I'd say Michael Ealy but I know it's just cause I'm warm for his form.
